Korea's results improve but questions remain

South Korean winger and captain Son Heung-min waves to fans after a friendly match against Egypt at Seoul World Cup Stadium, Tuesday. YonhapBy John DuerdenIt is not easy to arrange four international games in the space of 12 days, and credit should be given to the Korea Football Association (KFA) for giving the South Korean national team a perfect start to its preparations for the World Cup. The tournament kicks off in November and Korea's group, which contains Uruguay, Portugal and Ghana, is one where Korea could finish winners or end up at the bottom. After recent performances, the top of the group looks less likely but there are some reasons to be optimistic. The four games, all at home, brought a defeat, a tie and two wins but the results are by no means a be-all and end-all. In reverse order, Tuesday's 4-1 win over Egypt was a fine way to end the June games but it should be remembered that the North Africans were missing most of their best players, including Mohamed Salah of Liverpool who shared the English Premier League golden boot with Son Heung-min this season.Son has shown s

Budding midfielder trying to be sponge around nat'l team veterans

South Korea's midfielder Um Won-sang speaks during an online press conference held at the National Football Center in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, Sunday. Courtesy of Korea Football AssociationAs one of the youngest players on the current South Korean men's national football team at 23, midfielder Um Won-sang understands his role perfectly. He is not likely to start ahead of more established veterans at his position. But with his blazing speed and offensive instincts, Um can be a game breaker off the bench, someone who can give a stagnant offense some jolt in late moments. That is exactly what Um did against Paraguay last Friday. He entered the match at the hour mark, with South Korea trailing 2-0. Son Heung-min cut the deficit in half with a free kick goal on 66 minutes, and then Um set up Jeong Woo-yeong's dramatic equalizer in stoppage time for a 2-2 draw."I was looking for ways to help the team any way I can, since we were losing at the moment," Um said Sunday at an online press conference from the National Football Center in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
