Korea in 6th among 3rd-place teams with 2 matchdays left

Korea remained in position to sneak into the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup on Thursday with two more matchdays left in the group stage. Korea are in sixth among the 12 third-place teams after Groups D, E and F finished up their play Thursday across the United States. Korea finished third in Group A on three points from a win and two losses. They fell to South Africa 1-0 in Guadalupe, northeastern Mexico, on Wednesday, when a win or a draw would have sent them directly to the round of 32 as the Group A runner-up. Korea's knockout status is now at the mercy of other teams. With the tournament having expanded from 32 to 48 nations, eight best third-place teams get to play in the knockout stage, along with the top two countries from each of the 12 groups. Korea began Thursday in fourth place among third-ranked teams, with Bosnia and Herzegovina, after finishing third in Group B on Wednesday, having already secured their knockout spot with four points. Then on Thursday, Ecuador and Sweden joined them at four points — with the former upsetting Germany 2-1 and the latter playing Japan to

South Korea's Lee Kang-In and Ghana's Kamaldeen Sulemana compete for the ball during the World Cup group H soccer match between South Korea and Ghana, at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar, Nov. 28. Ghana beat South Korea 3-2. Korea Times photComing off the bench for the second straight match at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, midfielder Lee Kang-in was South Korea's most dangerous offensive player in the second half of a 3-2 loss to Ghana on Monday. This begs the question: What if Lee had started the match and played the full 90 minutes? The 21-year-old midfielder, however, wasn't dwelling on that question afterward."The lineup decision is up to the head coach," Lee said, referring to Paulo Bento. "I trust his decision 100 percent, and I will try to help the team the best I can whenever I have the opportunity."Lee came on in the 57th minute against Ghana at Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, west of Doha, with South Korea trailing 2-0. Lee made an immediate impact, picking Tariq Lamptey's pocket on the left wing and threading a cross toward the box for Cho Gue-sung for the f

Portugal advances to last 16, beats Uruguay 2-0 at World Cup

Portugal's Bernardo Silva, left, challenges for the ball with Uruguay's Rodrigo Bentancur during the World Cup group H soccer match between Portugal and Uruguay, at the Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar, Nov. 28. AP-YonhapCristiano Ronaldo wheeled away in celebration, acting as though he had scored once again at the World Cup.Not this time.Instead, it was Bruno Fernandes eventually credited with the goal that set up Portugal's 2-0 win over Uruguay on Monday, advancing the team into the last 16.Fernandes curled in a cross from the left that barely went over the head of the leaping Ronaldo and bounced into the far corner of the net in the 54th minute to give Portugal a 1-0 lead.A grinning Ronaldo threw his arms in the air, suggesting he got the final touch, and was embracing Fernandes as multiple close-up replays were being shown on the big screens in Lusail Stadium.Alas for Ronaldo, the goal wound up being awarded to Fernandes, who added a second from the penalty spot in stoppage time after a handball by Jose Maria Gimenez as he slid in to challenge the Manchester United playmaker.[PAP2

Korea fight but full of regrets after Ghana loss

Ghana beat South Korea 3-2. Korea Times photo by Choi Won-sukBy John DuerdenKorea's World Cup hopes are hanging by a slender thread after a 3-2 defeat against Ghana in Qatar on Monday. With just one point from the first two games in Group H, Paulo Bento's men are going to need a convincing win over Portugal on Friday and hope that other results are favorable. While the game had excitement for the neutral, there was, ultimately, disappointment for the Taeguk Warriors who will be left to regret defensive mistakes and missed chances. Ghana took a two goal lead in the first half, but the Taeguk Warriors came roaring back with two goals in the space of three second half minutes from Cho Gue-sung who became the first Korean to score more than once in a World Cup game. More defensive issues helped the Africans retake the lead and, this time, they held onto it despite plenty of pressure from the Reds. There was a promi
