Legacy on the line: Hong faces defining moment as coach

It was always likely that Hong Myung-bo’s coaching legacy would be defined by this World Cup. At the moment, it very much hangs in the balance. It does not take much imagination to know what the headlines will be if Korea falls at the first hurdle and heads home early. But if the Taeguk Warriors, who beat Czech Republic 2-1 before losing 1-0 to Mexico, defeat South Africa to take six points from the group, which would be its best showing since 2002, all may be well. Younger fans may not appreciate the stature that Hong had as a player in Korea and Asia. He was one of the stars of the 2002 World Cup, captaining the team to the semifinals and scoring the winning goal in the penalty shoot-out against Spain in the quarterfinals. His image then was of a strong, charismatic leader appearing at his fourth World Cup. That image has taken a hit, and some of the reverence has gone — such is the life as a coach, who naturally takes the blame when results are not great. In the early days of his coaching career, Hong looked like he could become the first Asian to have a global impact, perhaps ev

Braves minor leaguer Park Hoy-jun not invited to spring training

Park Hoy-jun, then of the Pittsburgh Pirates / YonhapA long winter for Atlanta Braves minor leaguer Park Hoy-jun has just gotten longer, as the Korean utility player did not earn an invitation to the Braves' spring training. The Braves announced a list of 26 non-roster invitees to their big league camp on Wednesday (U.S. local time), with 11 pitchers, four catchers, six infielders and five outfielders set to battle those on the 40-man roster for major league jobs.Park was not invited to camp. He joined the Braves organization in December in a trade from the Boston Red Sox, who had earlier traded for the 26-year-old from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Braves later designated Park for assignment, or DFA'd him in baseball parlance, and made him available on the waiver wire for any takers. After Park cleared waivers, with no one taking a flier on him, the Braves sent Park outright to their Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett, Georgia,Park split the 2022 season between the majors and the minors for the Pirates, but the Pirates first DFA'd him on Nov. 22. Chasing knockout berth at Women's World Cup, top scorer sees parallels with men's tournament

Ji So-yun, midfielder for the Korean women's national football team, trains at Munsu Football Stadium in Ulsan, some 310 kilometers southeast of Seoul, Jan. 30. YonhapPreparing for her third FIFA Women's World Cup, Korean star Ji So-yun couldn't help but notice parallels with the men's national team at their World Cup in Qatar last year.Starting in July in Australia, Korea will play in Group H at the Women's World Cup against Colombia, Morocco and Germany: a South American team, an African side and a heavily favored European team, respectively. The Korean men also played in Group H at their tournament against Uruguay, Ghana and Portugal: a South American side, an African team and a European team favored to win the group. The men beat some steep odds to squeak into the knockout stage. They held Uruguay to a goalless draw before losing to Ghana 3-2, but a 2-1 victory over Portugal sent them into the round of 16. Korea dropped to Brazil 4-1 in the first knockout match, but the Taegeuk Warriors were still lauded for their effort and collective "never-say-die" attitude.Should the Taegeuk La

S. Korean forward joins Celtic of Scottish Premiership

Celtic's forward Oh Hyeon-gyu poses with his new shirts during his signing ceremony with the Scottish club, Jan. 25. / Captured from Celtic's webpageBy John DuerdenIt has been some time since South Korea had a player at Celtic. Cha Du-ri and Ki Sung-yeung are fondly remembered in Glasgow. Now there is another: Oh Hyeon-gu, who has just joined Celtic and it will be fascinating to see how he gets on in Scotland's biggest city, especially because it has become something of a Japanese enclave in Europe. That is down to Ange Postecoglou, one of the most highly-rated coaches in the soccer world. The Australian, who led his home nation to the 2015 Asian Cup with a victory over South Korea in the final, won the Japanese title with Yokohama F.Marinos in 2019. It was not just the title that was worthy of praise but the style of play. Postecoglou wants his team to be on the front foot at all times, to attack whatever opposition they face. He arrived at Celtic in 2021 and delivered the league title in his first season, treating the 50,000-plus fans who cram into the club's Parkhead stadium to som

Nat'l football coach calls on players to 'break their own barriers'

Colin Bell, head coach of the Korean women's national football team, addresses his players during a training session at Munsu Football Stadium in Ulsan, Monday. YonhapColin Bell, head coach of the Korean women's national football team, believes his squad has made significant strides during his three-plus years in charge. The Englishman also thinks there is always more that his players can give. It was the gist of the coach's message at the start of the team's first training camp of 2023 on Monday, with the FIFA Women's World Cup about six months away.“I am always trying to convince the players that we can do more and we have to reach a level that they've never been at before to have a successful World Cup,” Bell told reporters at Munsu Football Stadium in Ulsan, some 310 kilometers southeast of Seoul. “That takes a lot of determination and a lot of sacrifice. We can't just turn up and play. That's not going to work. We have to be doing more and to be prepared to run more and work harder than all the nations.”Bell insisted players will each have to be driven and

Reuters-YonhapTottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min returned to form with two goals in their 3-0 defeat of second-tier Preston North End in the FA Cup fourth round, with debutant Arnaut Danjuma also on target at Deepdale on Saturday.Korean Son has endured a lean season but made the difference with two superb goals after the break as the visitors moved comfortably through to the next round.Five minutes into the second half the ball was played to Son outside the penalty area and he struck an unstoppable curling left-foot drive low into the corner of the net.It was only his second goal since mid-October but 19 minutes later he struck again, turning smoothly on the edge of the box from Ivan Perisic's pass and firing past Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.Tottenham's Son Heung-min, right, scores his side's second goal during the FA Cup 4th round soccer match between Preston North End and Tottenham Hotspur at the Deepdale Stadium in Preston, England, Saturday, Jan. 28. Aryna Sabalenka wins 1st Grand Slam title at Australian Open

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus holds the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy after defeating Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the women's singles final at the Australian Open tennis championship in Melbourne, Australia, Saturday, Jan. 28. AP-YonhapOne point away from her first Grand Slam title, Aryna Sabalenka faulted. And then she faulted again. She grimaced. She yelled and turned her back to the court. She wiggled her shoulders and exhaled.Clearly, this business of winning the Australian Open was not bound to happen without a bit of a struggle Saturday night. Sabalenka knew deep inside that would be the case. She also knew that all of the effort she put in, to overcome self-doubt and those dreaded double-faults, had to pay off eventually. Just had to.And so, as she wasted a second match point by flubbing a forehand, and a third by again missing another, Sabalenka did her best to stay calm, something she used to find quite difficult. She hung in there until a fourth chance to close out Elena Rybakina presented itself ― and this time, Sabalenka saw a forehand from her similarly powerful foe sa
