World Cup work still remains for Korea

On Thursday morning in Korea, millions will tune in to see what transpires in the Mexican city of Monterey as Korea faces South Africa. A win or a draw will ensure second place in Group A, but defeat would mean a third-place finish — though that could still mean a place in the Round of 32 — or fourth, which would mean elimination and humiliation. Which version of the Taeguk Warriors will turn up? Will it be the team that looked full of energy, speed and imagination as they beat the Czech Republic 2-1? Or will it be the passive pack that lost 1-0 to Mexico? If they had won or tied the game, then the final group game could have been about resting a few players and getting ready for the Round of 32. Instead, there is work still to do. South Africa, ranked 38 places below Korea at 61st in the world, have yet to impress. Their opening games were a 2-0 defeat against Mexico and a 1-1 draw with the Czechs. Bafana Bafana’s Belgian boss Hugo Broos is expecting a tough test. "I'm very sorry to say this, but they are like Duracells: You plug them in, and they start running, and they run for

KBO surpasses 1 mil. in attendance

This photo shows Incheon SSG Landers Field in Incheon, some 30 kilometers west of Seoul, during a Korea Baseball Organization regular season game between the Kia Tigers and the SSG Landers, April 2. YonhapThe Korean baseball league said Thursday it has topped 1 million in attendance after 101 games this season, the fifth-fastest rate in the current 10-team setting. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced that its 10 teams combined to surpass the 1 million mark after the previous night's games. This is the fifth-earliest point in a season for the KBO to reach 1 million fans drawn since it expanded to 10 teams in 2015. Clubs each play 144 games, 16 times against each other. In 2019, the KBO needed just 90 games to draw 1 million fans to set the record in the current setup. The KBO did not consider attendance numbers from the past three seasons, all of which were affected by crowd-related restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, with the vast majority of games played without fans, the KBO managed only 328,317 fans. The following year, when restrictions were parti

Nat'l football coach Klinsmann says key defender 'all focused again' after tough stretch

Jurgen Klinsmann, head coach of the Korean men's national football team, speaks with reporters at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul after returning from a trip to Europe to meet with national team players, April 26. YonhapKorea men's football head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Wednesday that Napoli center back Kim Min-jae, the most important defender for the national team who'd recently gone through a rough patch, is back in a good place.Klinsmann returned to Korea earlier in the day from a 10-day trip to Europe, where he met with key members of the national team based in the leagues across the continent.Perhaps no meeting was more important than the one Klinsmann had with Kim, after the 26-year-old defender found himself in some controversy after a friendly match last month.Napoli played in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals against AC Milan during Klinsmann's visit, and that Kim was suspended for the second leg of the showdown after picking up his third yellow card of the tournament in the opening leg turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Klinsmann."He didn't pl

Growing crowds a positive sign in K League

A display board shows that a total of 45,007 people have visited the Seoul World Cup Stadium to watch the K League match between FC Seoul and Daegu, April 8. / Korea Times photo by Jhoo Dong-chanBy John DuerdenThe 2023 K League season is two months old and there is some cause for optimism for a number of reasons. The most important is that there are some healthy attendances around Korea.Last weekend, over 30,000 fans watched FC Seoul defeat Suwon Bluewings 3-1 in the “Super Match,” traditionally the biggest fixture in the country and one that has usually attracted big crowds. It is more encouraging that other clubs are seeing more fans coming through the gates. Ten thousand watched Jeju United lose 2-0 at home to Jeonbuk Motors as the visitor, who has won seven titles in the last decade, showed signs of returning to form after a slow start to the season. If that was a healthy crowd then there were almost 17,000 at the home of leader Ulsan Horang-i who was held to a 2-2 draw by Pohang Steelers in the East Coast Derby. Ulsan only salvaged a point due to a late equalizer. As
