Son Heung-min eyes history vs. Mexico

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — Korean captain Son Heung-min is in the starting lineup for his second straight match at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Mexico as he takes aim at a piece of history. Son will be the striker against Mexico in the teams' second Group A match at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, western Mexico, for the 7 p.m. kickoff. It will begin 10 a.m. Friday in Korea. Son is a goal away from becoming Korea's all-time World Cup leading scorer with four. He is currently tied with two former players, Ahn Jung-hwan and Park Ji-sung. Son had a slew of chances but ultimately didn't find the back of the net in a 2-1 victory over Czechia last week. Oh Hyeon-gyu, who netted the go-ahead goal over Czechia after replacing Son in the second half, will begin his second straight contest on the bench. Head coach Hong Myung-bo made one change from the lineup that started against Czechia, with wingback Kim Moon-hwan replacing Lee Tae-seok. Seol Young-woo, who played on the right side in last week's match, will slide over to the left side as Kim takes over on the right. The winner of this match will be the

England won, but it was a far from convincing start to its Women's World Cup bid

Haiti's midfielder #06 Melchie Dumonay, right, and England's defender #06 Millie Bright fight for the ball during the Australia and New Zealand 2023 Women's World Cup Group D football match between England and Haiti at Brisbane Stadium in Brisbane, July 22. AFP-YonhapAs European champions and one of the favorites to lift the Women's World Cup, England was always expected to make a winning start. At least the Lionesses can tick that item off the checklist.Beyond that, there were few positives to take from an unconvincing 1-0 victory Saturday night against Haiti, which was making its debut at the global tournament.A twice-taken Georgia Stanway penalty was the difference between the teams that are ranked fourth and 53rd by soccer's world governing body.“It's so important to win your first game in a tournament. It's been a long build-up to today and we're kind of happy to just get over the line," a relieved Stanway said in the wake of the game. The sense back in England was that it was an underwhelming start for a team that has had its problems recently.Haiti ― particularly through t

US and Japan make fast World Cup starts but England labor to victory

China's Wang Shuang runs after the ball, with Denmark's Karen Holmgaard, right, during the Women's World Cup Group D soccer match at Perth Rectangular Stadium, in Perth, Australia, July 22. AP-YonhapEngland squeezed past Haiti 1-0 as they began their Women's World Cup title bid in unconvincing fashion Saturday, but holders the United States and former champions Japan were far more comfortable.European champions England have been touted as the prime challengers to a United States team chasing an unprecedented third World Cup crown in a row.But they will have to do far better than the display they put on in front of nearly 45,000 spectators in Brisbane, where a Haiti side making their World Cup debut could have snatched a point at the end.A Georgia Stanway penalty in the first half put Sarina Wiegman's side ahead, but despite having more of the ball and more shots, England had goalkeeper Mary Earps to thank for preserving their narrow lead. She made a superb save with her left leg as the time ticked down after Roseline Eloissaint found herself all alone with only Earps to beat.England,
