Korea can face Mexico with no fear

Korea heads into the lion’s den to take on Mexico in Guadalajara late Friday morning Seoul time. Ever since the draw was made for the 2026 World Cup in December, everyone knew that this would be the toughest game. However, it is not as daunting as it could have been, as the Taegeuk Warriors have three points in the bank after a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic last week. With its final game against South Africa to come next week, Korea is in a good position. Had the opener ended in a loss — and that was a possibility before Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeong-gyu scored to negate a Czech lead — then the team would have desperately needed a result against Mexico and been under real pressure. Now, a draw would be fine, and even a defeat, as long as the performance was OK, would not be the end of the world — or the World Cup. A win, however, would be spectacular and a real statement against a Mexican team ranked 13th in the world, eight above Hong Myung-bo’s men. It would help Korea become the first team to secure a place in the Round of 32 in the new expanded format. There’s more. In i

Saudi stars make Asia tougher for Korean clubs

Al Hilal's Neymar poses during a training session at Al Hilal Football Club in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Aug. 21. Reuters-YonhapBy John DuerdenIt is not even four months since the last AFC Champions League finished but the draw for the group stage of the new edition has already taken place and it will all kick off next month. The last time that a Korean team lifted the trophy was 2020. And while that is not a long gap, in the past you might have expected Korean teams to continue to do well, as the country has been the best performer in the continental competition but change, it seems, is in the air.Saudi Arabian teams, always strong in this tournament, have strengthened considerably. Al Hilal have won four titles, more than any other, and the Riyadh giants have signed Brazilian superstar Neymar. He goes along with other top-class talents such as Ruben Neves, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic ― players who have all shone at the highest levels of world football. In short, a very good team has become stronger. Then there is Cristiano Ronaldo and others at Al Nassr and Karim Ben

YonhapThe World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to prove doping by a Russian figure skater who controversially beat Korean star Kim Yu-na for gold at the 2014 Winter Games, Seoul's anti-doping body said Monday. The Korea Anti-Doping Agency (KADA) had asked WADA on July 21 to investigate earlier claims made by Adelina Sotnikova that she had a positive doping test in 2014 but was cleared by her "B" sample. It is considered rare in sports doping for an athlete to test positive in an A sample but return a different result in a B sample. The Korean Sport Olympic Committee (KSOC) had also asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to look into Sotnikova's comments, made in a since-deleted YouTube clip on a Russian channel in July. The IOC told the KSOC earlier this month that it would not launch any investigation into the Sotnikova case because it hadn't identified any violations by t
