    Landers release slumping starter Veneziano

The SSG Landers announced Saturday they have cut ties with struggling starting pitcher Anthony Veneziano. The Landers added they will announce their acquisition of Veneziano's replacement shortly. Veneziano, the 28-year-old left-hander, struggled to a 6.10 ERA and a 2-5 record in 16 starts in his first Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season. The Landers scrambled to sign Veneziano in January after terminating a deal with their initial target, Drew VerHagen, over a failed physical. Veneziano never found his groove, giving up at least a run in 15 of his 16 outings. He posted a 7.23 ERA in four April starts and then had a 7.31 ERA in five games in June. The Landers have the highest team ERA in the KBO at 5.79 and they have received poor performances from their other foreign pitchers, too. Mitch White, a returnee from 2025, made just six appearances this year due to a shoulder injury and carried a 4.11 ERA before getting released last month. His short-term replacement, Ginjiro Hiramoto, went 0-3 with a 9.56 ERA in four outings, prompting the Landers to cut bait in early June. Thomas Hatch, w

Yoon Ina climbs into tie for 3rd after 2nd round of Chevron Championship

Korea's Yoon Ina climbed into a tie for third place after the second round of the first major tournament of the 2026 LPGA season in Houston. Yoon fired a four-under 68 with six birdies and two bogeys at the Chevron Championship at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas, Friday (local time). At seven-under 137 overall, she trails leader Nelly Korda of the United States and Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit. Yoon, who was tied for eighth after the first round, opened Friday with a birdie on the par-five first hole but dropped a shot at the second. She recovered with back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth holes and remained steady through the turn. On the back nine, she added three birdies without a bogey, including a closing birdie at the par-four 18th after sticking her second shot within 1 meter. "I've been trying to focus more on the process than the results since last week," Yoon said. "It helps me stay calm." Asked if she would take a more aggressive approach in the remaining rounds, she said she would stick to her current game plan, noting the difficulty of major championship

Koreans in early contention at 1st LPGA major of season

A few Korean players found themselves in early contention at the first major tournament of the 2026 LPGA season in Houston. Lee So-mi fired five-under 67 to begin the Chevron Championship at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston on Thursday (local time) to sit tied for second place. Nelly Korda of the United States, world No. 2, is the sole leader at seven-under. Lee, who earned her maiden LPGA title last year with Im Jin-hee at the Dow Championship, had six birdies and made her lone bogey at the par-3 ninth hole. She missed only one of 13 fairways and hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation. "Recently, I've been having problems with my shots. I think the problem is I was trying to hit it so perfectly," Lee said. "And one part I improved was my mental game, and also before the round, I practiced my putting more than usual. I think that helped a lot definitely. I really like the course. I think I will prepare and focus more on my putter and my driver this week." Lee started on the back nine and birdied her first hole, the par-4 ninth. "The first birdie going in gave me a lot of confidence and tha

Dodgers' Kim Hye-seong enjoys multihit game; Giants' Lee Jung-hoo held hitless

Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers put up his third multihit game of the season, while his fellow Korean for the San Francisco Giants, Lee Jung-hoo, was held without a hit for the first time in three games. Kim batted 2-for-4 with an RBI to help the Dodgers beat the Giants 3-0 at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Thursday (local time). The Dodgers had lost the two previous games against their National League West foe by a combined score of 6-1 but gave the Giants a taste of their own medicine by holding them to just one hit in the shutout win this time. Starting at shortstop and batting eighth, Kim drove in the Dodgers' third run with a single in the fourth inning. Kim got his second hit with a single in the ninth inning and raised his batting average from .300 to .324 in the process. Lee, on the other hand, was 0-for-3. With a man at first in the bottom of the second, Lee hit a grounder at Kim for a 6-4-3 double play. Lee then flied out to center in the fifth and popped out to first in the eighth. His batting average is now .253. The Giants took two out of three games of this series, w

Court backs sports ministry on disciplinary action for football chief

A court ruled Thursday that the sports ministry's call for heavy disciplinary action against the country's top football official in 2024 was justified. The Seoul Administrative Court made the ruling in a lawsuit filed by the Korea Football Association (KFA) seeking to cancel the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's attempt to discipline its leader, Chung Mong-gyu. The ministry announced the results of its audit of the KFA in November 2024, demanding the suspension of Chung and other senior association officials over the controversial hiring of the men's national team head coach and other irregularities. The court said the ministry's request did not appear to be unreasonable or illegal and fell within the scope of its permissible discretion. It also noted that the KFA is not obligated to unconditionally comply with the ministry's request and the ministry has no means to directly discipline KFA officials or enforce measures. Following the ministry's announcement, the KFA had also sought a temporary injunction to suspend the disciplinary request. In February last year, a court approved

Ex-MLB player Choi Ji-man signs with Korean minor league club

Former major league first baseman Choi Ji-man has signed with a minor league club in Korea. The Ulsan Whales of the Futures League, the minor league of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), announced Thursday that Choi, 34, agreed to a one-year deal worth 30 million won ($20,260), the same deal as all the other Korean players for the club. The Whales, who joined the Futures League this season, will formally introduce Choi on Monday. Choi logged 525 games in Major League Baseball (MLB) for six clubs from 2016 to 2023, putting up 67 home runs, 238 RBIs and a .234 batting average. He enjoyed his best years with the Tampa Bay Rays from 2018 to 2022. In 2020, Choi became the first Korean position player to play in a World Series. After playing in Triple-A in 2024, Choi returned home last year to begin his mandatory military service. He was discharged after just three months due to a knee injury. Korean players who signed their first professional contracts in another country must wait two years after their last game with their foreign club to be eligible for the KBO draft. Giants' Lee Jung-hoo picks up hit, Dodgers' Kim Hye-seong silenced in Korean duel

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants picked up a hit for the second straight game while his fellow Korean for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kim Hye-seong, was kept in check in the battle of the National League West rivals. Starting in right field and batting sixth, Lee went 1-for-3 and scored a run to help the Giants beat the Dodgers 3-0 at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wednesday (local time). Lee didn't get a hit in his first two at-bats against Dodgers starter Shohei Ohtani, before singling off reliever Jack Dreyer in the bottom seventh. Heliot Ramos followed up with a single and Patrick Bailey launched a decisive three-run home run. Lee was lifted late during Tuesday's game after getting tagged out at home in an awkward-looking slide. He said after the game he had "banged up" his quad, but showed no ill effects Wednesday. Lee was batting .185 after going 0-for-4 on April 12. Since then, Lee has batted 12-for-30 while collecting multiple hits in half of his eight games. His batting average is now up to .262. Kim, who batted eighth and played shortstop, was 0-for-3 with a strikeout and t

Long-time minor leaguer trying to make most of KBO opportunity

Since the start of his professional career in 2018, LG Twins outfielder Song Chan-eui has spent far more time in the minors than with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club. He has logged over 300 games in the Futures League but only played his 131st KBO game Wednesday night. Now 27 with a limited track record, Song is resigned to his fate as a player who will only receive KBO opportunities if another player gets hurt or falls into a slump. And instead of wallowing in self-pity, Song is determined to make the most of what few chances he gets. Take this week, for instance, as Song has been getting some playing time in place of struggling outfielder Hong Chang-ki, who is off to a dismal, 8-for-54 (.148) start in his first 17 games. Song began the season in the KBO but was shipped to the minors after logging just one pinch-hit at-bat on March 31. He was then called up ahead of Tuesday's game against the Hanwha Eagles at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul and promptly delivered two RBIs in a 6-5 victory. Back at Jamsil on Wednesday against the Eagles, Song smoked a two-run home run off star

Eagles manager trying not to dwell on losses

As losses pile up for his club, Hanwha Eagles manager Kim Kyung-moon said Wednesday he is trying not to brood over close calls after each game. In a rematch of the 2025 Korean Series, the Eagles fell to the defending champions LG Twins 6-5 on Tuesday night in Seoul for their seventh loss in 10 games. The Eagles dropped to 8-11-0 (wins-losses-ties) for the season. The Twins scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh at Jamsil Baseball Stadium on Austin Dean's two-out single. Eagles right fielder Yonathan Perlaza lunged for the sinking liner but couldn't quite make the grab. Asked to look back on the play before the second game of the series against the Twins on Wednesday, Kim said he would rather not discuss what could have been. "Perlaza gave his best effort. It would have been a really nice catch," Kim said. "But as manager, I don't want to talk about what didn't happen because he tried hard until the last moment. I think it's better if we just focus on trying to win today's game. "If you keep thinking about close calls, you will never be able to get to sleep over the 144-game

Twins starter Chirinos sidelined with elbow injury

The LG Twins announced Wednesday their starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos will be out for at least a month with an elbow injury. Prior to a home game against the Hanwha Eagles at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul, Twins manager Youm Kyoung-youb said Chirinos received an injection in his ailing right elbow earlier Wednesday. The Venezuelan pitcher was the Twins' Opening Day starter in both 2025 and 2026. He went 13-6 with a 3.31 ERA in 30 starts last season — his first in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) — but has struggled to a 6.75 ERA and a 1-2 record in four starts so far this season. Chirinos showed some signs of improvement lately, holding the opponents to two runs in 10 innings combined over his past two starts. Youm said the elbow trouble wasn't to blame for Chirinos' early woes, noting the pitcher first complained of pains after a bullpen session Monday. "He played catch Tuesday and said he didn't think he'd be able to pitch this week," Youm said of Chirinos, who would have been in line to start Thursday. "At first, we thought about skipping one turn in the rotation and not t

World Cup broadcast deal limits viewing to JTBC, KBS as talks collapse with MBC, SBS

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be broadcast in Korea only on JTBC and KBS after last-minute negotiations with other major networks broke down, narrowing viewing options for one of the country’s most-watched global sporting events. JTBC said Wednesday that it had finalized a co-broadcast agreement with KBS after offering identical terms to the country’s three major terrestrial broadcasters — KBS, MBC and SBS — and receiving responses by Monday. “We confirmed a joint broadcast with KBS after reviewing responses from the three broadcasters,” JTBC said. “We feel responsible for the prolonged negotiations over broadcasting rights for a major national event and will prepare thoroughly to deliver a strong broadcast.” Talks with MBC and SBS on reselling the television rights ultimately failed, meaning the tournament will only be available through JTBC and KBS. The 2026 World Cup, set to open on June 11 (local time) and run for more than a month, will feature 104 matches — the largest in the tournament's history — and will be jointly hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexic
