Brazil to compete with Netherlands in World Cup quarters

Five-time world champions Brazil and the Netherlands will have a showdown in the round of eight match in the World Cup on July 2 as they beat Chile and Slovakia 3-0 and 2-1, respectively.

Brazil scored twice within four minutes in a 3-0 drubbing of Chile on Monday. Juan struck a header in the 35th minute and Luis Fabiano was the beneficiary of some fine passing in making it 2-0 in the 38th at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park Stadium.

In the 14th minute into the second half, Man of the Match Robinho finished off the scoring.

It will be the fourth World Cup encounter between Brazil and the Dutch following Brazil’s semifinal win in 1998 and quarterfinal victory in 1994. The Dutch beat Brazil in the second round in 1974.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

The Oranje lacked much of the passing artistry for which the Dutch are traditionally known. Both of the goals were scored off long passes from midfield: Arjen Robben corralled a long ball on the right wing in the 18th minute and Wesley Sneijder scored in the 84th when Dirk Kuyt headed a free kick at midfield away from the goalkeeper.

Slovakian footballers were desperate but failed to make chance till the end of 90 minutes. But in the three minutes into injury time, Robert Vittek converted a penalty kick to his country’s only goal.

It was Vittek’s fourth goal of the tournament, tying him for the lead with Argentina’s Goinzalo Higuain. But Vittek will get no more this year.

브라질, 준준결승에서 네델란드와 일전

월드컵 통산 6회 우승을 도전하는 브라질이 칠레를 3-0으로 완봉, 슬로바키아를 2-1로 따돌린 네델란드와 7월 2일 준준결승에서 격돌한다.

브라질은 월요일 대 칠레전 3-0 완봉에서 4분에 두골을 넣었다. 전반 35분 주앙이 헤딩 슛을 날렸으며 38분 루이스 파비아누가 멋진 패스를 받아 2-0으로 만들었다. 후반 14분 이 게임 최고의 선수였던 호비뉴가 마지막 골 세례를 장식했다.

이번 브라질과 네델란드의 대결은 월드컵 네 번째로 브라질은 1998년 준결승에서 승리, 1994년 준준결승에서 승리했으며 1974 16강에서는 네델란드가 브라질을 꺾었다.

한편 네델란드는 1998년 이후 처음으로 8강에 진출했다.

“오랑제” 군단은 전통적으로 잘 알려진 예술적인 패싱이 이번 16강에서는 많이 보이니 않았으며 두 골 다 롱 패스로 얻어냈다. 아르연 로번이 전 반 18분 장거리 볼을 골로 만들었으며 후반 39분 디르크 카위트가 미드필드에서 프리킥을 머리로 띄운것을 베슬레이 스네이더르가 받아 넣었다.

슬로바키아는 사력을 다했지만 90분이 끝나고 부상으로 더 주어진 3분에 들어서 로버트 비텍이 페널티 킥을 골로 연결시키 한점을 만회하는데 그쳤다.

비텍을 이번 월드컵에서 4골을 넣어 아르헨티나의 곤살로 이과인과 최다 득점 동율을 이루었으나 슬로바키아가 이번 16강에서 져 더 이상 골을 넣을 수 없게 됐다.
