Medical schools urge students to return to class as reinstatement deadline approaches

A consultative body of medical school deans on Friday urged medical school students to return to class as their reinstatement deadlines neared. "We will firmly uphold next year's medical school enrollment quota of 3,058 students, and the 40 universities are preparing to ensure that students receive a high-quality education," the Korean Association of Medical Colleges and Graduate School of Medicine (KAMC) said in a letter to medical school students who are taking a leave of absence en masse to protest against the government's medical reform plans that included a sharp increase in the number of students admitted to medical schools. "However, all of this will only be possible if you return to school," the letter read. The KAMC has 40 medical schools nationwide under its wing. The message came as major medical schools, including Yonsei University, Korea University and Kyungpook National University, were set to close registration for students' reinstatement on Friday. Seoul to launch web publications, newsletters for foreign residents

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Friday that it will begin publishing web-based magazines and newsletters for foreign residents starting next month. The web magazine, available in e-book format, will be released once a month, while the newsletter will be sent out twice a month. Both will be published in Korean and English and made available on the Seoul Global Center website. Ahead of the launch, the city government is recruiting a content creation team composed of foreign residents who live, study or work in Seoul, aiming for the content to directly reflect their perspectives. Participants are expected to share personal experiences on topics such as settling in Seoul, children's education, self-development and visa status changes. BOK chief calls for reform of college admission system to nurture talent

Bank of Korea (BOK) Gov. Rhee Chang-yong on Friday called for reforming Korea's college entrance system in order to nurture talents capable of leading innovations. Rhee made the point during the opening ceremony of a research institute on population and talent issues at Yonsei University in Seoul. "Leading technological innovation and nurturing talent with creative problem-solving abilities are crucial for Korea to become a first mover in the world. But the current exam-focused education system limits the opportunities for young people to demonstrate their creativity," Rhee said. "The college entrance system should focus on fostering talent who are not afraid of challenges, and have diverse backgrounds and experiences, rather than raising students who are more inclined to follow their parents' instructions and conform to given demands," he added. 7 out of 10 Koreans willing to pay more for ESG firms: survey

Seven out of 10 Koreans are willing to pay more for products from companies that actively pursue environmental, social and government (ESG) management, a local survey showed Friday. In the survey of 3,000 people aged 18 and older conducted by the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) and Hankook Research, 73 percent of the respondents said they preferred to buy products made by environmentally friendly companies. Seventy percent of them replied they are happy to spend more on products made by companies actively engaged in social contribution activities, the survey showed. "ESG management is essential for companies to seek growth and to be chosen by consumers despite growing uncertainties due to the U.S. government's protectionist policies and sluggish domestic consumption," an FKI official said. And 64 percent of the 3,000 respondents said they have participated in a boycott campaign against certain products in the past. Korea aims to use APEC leverage to boost regional tourism

Korea plans to use the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, as an opportunity to boost regional tourism and showcase the host region to foreign visitors, the government said Wednesday. Acting President Choi Sang-mok conducted an on-site inspection of APEC preparations and hosted a meeting with related ministries, municipalities and organizations to discuss ways to stabilize people’s livelihoods in the tourism sector in the host city. Marriages with foreign spouses in Korea rise for 3rd year in 2024

The number of marriages between Koreans and foreign spouses rose for the third consecutive year in 2024, data showed Thursday. The number of multicultural marriages reached 20,759 last year, up 1,042 from the previous year's 19,717 cases, according to the data from Statistics Korea. The number of international marriages sharply declined to around 15,000 in 2020 from about 24,000 the previous year, and slid further to around 13,000 in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the figure rebounded to 16,666 cases in 2022. Of the total marriages in Korea last year, multicultural marriages accounted for 9.3 percent, down from 10.1 percent the previous year. Vietnamese women made up the largest share of all foreign wives at 32.1 percent, followed by Chinese women at 16.7 percent and Thai women at 13.7 percent. Among foreign husbands, those from the United States accounted for 28.9 percent, followed by those from China at 17.6 percent and Vietnam at 15 percent.
