Top musicians from various genres will showcase a night of music on Jeju Island, celebrating the opening of the 12th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity on May 31.
Held at the International Convention Center Jeju (ICC) at 8 p.m., the opening concert will feature singer-songwriter ALi, musical actor Nam Kyung-joo, soprano Jung Seung-won and harmonica player Jeon Jae-duck.
The theme of the opening performance is “Peace Wave from Jeju,” representing the wave of peace and prosperity originated in Jeju and spreads out to the world at the 12th edition of the international forum.
The 90-minute show consists of diverse acts, starting with a dynamic “samulnori”(Korean traditional percussion quartet) performance presented by the Korean Performing Arts Development, MARO, a performance group based in Jeju. MARO will bring out the essence of local folk culture through passionate movements with elements of mythology.
ALi, known for her powerful voice, will sing five songs including “From Me to Me” and “The Vow” from the soundtrack of television drama “Golden Rainbow.” She shot to stardom by competing in the hit show “Immortal Songs 2” where top singers reinterpreted the oldies but goodies music and she will perform the songs made her popular such as “People Are More Beautiful Than Flowers,” “Desert Island” and “With Our Love.”
Soprano Jung will cover Sarah Brightman’s “Nella Fantasia” and “Think of Me” from the musical “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Veteran musical actor Nam will sing Korean’s favorite “This Is the Moment” from the musical “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Sunset Glow” by Lee Moon-sae. Jung and Nam will also do duet songs — “All I Ask of You” from “The Phantom of the Opera” and “A Whole New World” from the animation “Aladdin.”
Jeon is the only professional jazz harmonica player in Korea despite being visually impaired. He will play six songs including George Benson’s “Breezin’,” Herbie Hancock’s “Chan’s Song,” Sting’s “Englishman in New York” and Nat King Cole’s “Quizas Quizas Quizas.”
Admission is free for all session participants as well as those who registered through the forum’s website. Complimentary tickets are also available at the lobby of Jeju MBC, the information desk of the ICC and the box office of Jeju International Peace Center.
