YonhapFive-term lawmaker Hong Joon-pyo was admitted back to the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) on Thursday via a unanimous decision by the party's leadership. The PPP's supreme council made the decision to return the party membership to Hong, a former floor leader of the biggest conservative party who ran for the presidency in 2017 on its ticket. Hong defected from the main opposition party, then named the United Future Party, in March last year in protest against its decision to disqualify him from running for the 2020 parliamentary election on the party's ticket. Hong left the party and won a parliamentary seat representing a constituency in Daegu as an independent. A progressive YouTube channel was confirmed Thursday to have authored one of the controversial secret files allegedly detailing various allegations surrounding a leading presidential hopeful for the opposition bloc and his family members.The YouTube channel, Open Mind TV, acknowledged in its breaking news a day earlier that it wrote part of multiple different versions of what is known as the "Yoon Seok-youl X-file" after the name of the former prosecution chief.According to political sources, the six-page PDF file has been circulated among politicians and online in recent days, rattling the political circle as Yoon is gearing up to declare his bid to run for the presidency.While many see the content of the file as presenting nothing critically damaging to Yoon, others say the document may deal a heavy blow to his presidential bid. Chinese authorities had collected the passports from the passengers after their arrival in Beijing from Incheon, west of Seoul, on June 4 for documentation purposes before they entered the three-week mandatory coronavirus quarantine at a designated hotel. The authorities later confirmed that the passports were burned along with other trash by mistake, the source said. A staff member apparently thought that the plastic bag carrying the passports was for disposal.
