NK lays down conditions for reopening of Gaesong Complex

North Korea on Sunday laid out conditions to reopen the Gaesong Industrial Complex, which was left empty when all South Korean staff pulled out after the regime refused to discuss the matter. Pyongyang said Seoul must "stop all hostile activities and military provocations" if it is "sincerely worried about the fate of [the industrial park] and afraid of stalled inter-Korean relations." The North cited among these hostilities regular simulation war games between South Korea and the U.S. planned for the summer. A spokesman for the North's National Defense Commission told the official KCNA news agency that Pyongyang objects to the arrival of the Nimitz Aircraft Carrier strike group in Busan Port this week and the simulation exercise dubbed "Ulchi Freedom Guardian" scheduled for August. The last group of South Korean staffers returned from the industrial park last Friday. A government official in Seoul was pessimistic. "The North objects to a South Korea-U.S. military exercise that hasn't even started yet. The North Korean regime evidently doesn't want to ease tensions by normalizing ope

Last S. Koreans return from Kaesong complex

South Korea's seven remaining workers at an inter-Korean complex in North Korea returned home Friday, wrapping up a pullout from the zone amid high tensions on the peninsula. The complete withdrawal cast clouds over the fate of the Kaesong Industrial Complex just north of the heavily fortified border ― the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean cooperation ― raising concern over the possibility of permanent closure. The Ministry of Unification said the South Korean nationals crossed the border at around 6:43 p.m. after reaching an agreement on the payment of outstanding wages to North Korean workers earlier in the day. The two sides also agreed on the amount of taxes that South Korean companies owed Pyongyang. The return took place after two South Korean vehicles carrying cash reached Kaesong. The ministry declined to elaborate further on the details of the agreement, including the amount of wage payments, but said that the North has not responded to Seoul's request to be allowed to bring back finished products and components left behind at the factory park. The return came a wee

Man, woman with no relations attempt suicide at same site, same time

Things like this do not normally happen on a sunny days but a man and a woman, who have never met in their lives, decided to take their lives on the same day and same place Thursday.Despite their determination, the police received reports of their intentions and were saved from terminating their lives. The report was first filed by a 32-year-old Lee who got a message from the father who said “I am sorry that I have to be the first to go.”Upon receiving the message, he called his mother who reported the incident to the police. The police tracked the man’s cell phone and found him at the coasts of the Han River near the Mapo Bridge. What was strange was that while all this was happening, a woman jumped into the river and those in the area went hare wire. The woman, as it turned out, went to a top university in the United States and got a job with a large conglomerate in the United States but found it hard to fit in.
