Four student dissidents acquitted decades after being imprisoned

Four former student activists were acquitted in a retrial on Monday 39 years after they were imprisoned for campaigning against the military regime led by then President Park Chung-hee.In 1974, the four were sentenced to prison terms ranging from seven to 10 years for leading a protest against the revision of the Yushin Constitution that the former president introduced to prolong his stay in power, in violation of a now-defunct emergency decree. In the retrial, the Seoul High Court delivered a not-guilty verdict to the former students of Sogang University, including Yim Sang-woo who is now a history professor at the school, saying emergency decree No. 1 is defunct and unconstitutional. The decision was made in line with a landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court in March that three emergency decrees issued by the former president were unconstitutional as they excessively violated people's basic rights.Park, who ruled the nation from 1961-1979 after seizing power in a military coup, is the father of President Park Geun-hye.The elder Park proclaimed presidential emergency decree No. 1

Int'l hacking group claims to have attacked N. Korean Web sites

An international hacking group that had previously claimed it hacked North Korean Web sites said on Sunday it launched more cyber attacks into about a dozen sites based in the communist state. The group called "Anonymous" said on its Twitter account (@AnonyOpsKorea) that it successfully hacked the Web site for the North Korean radio station called "Voice of Korea." Anonymous released the photo of the opening page of the Web site, with the "VOK" logo at the top right-hand corner and the word "Hacked" positioned at center.Anonymous also said it targeted www.uriminzokkiri.com, the North's propaganda site, and the homepage for the state-run Korean Central News Agency, but didn't say whether these attacks were successful. The hacking group said Sunday's attacks were part of only a small operation and that they will launch a "very huge" operation on June 25, the anniversary of the Korean War.In April, Anonymous released the list of some 9,000 subscribers to Uriminzokkiri, including about 2,000 members using e-mail addresses provided by South Korean portal sites, companies and newspapers.Anon

Over half of married S. Korean women say having child not a must

More than half of married South Korean women said that having a child is not a must in their married lives, a survey showed Sunday, an indication that the importance of children in marriage is fading in South Korean society. The survey, released in a report by a researcher at the state-run Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, showed that 53.5 percent of some 4,500 married women responded that having a child is not a must, though it's better to have one, while 46.3 percent think otherwise. It is the first time in such surveys so far that the ratio of respondents who see children as an indispensable element of marriage has dropped below 50 percent. The corresponding ratios in previous surveys were 54.5 percent in 2003, 53.8 percent in 2006 and 55.9 percent in 2009.The latest survey also showed that the traditional favoring of sons over daughters is also fading, with 58.3 percent saying they don't care about having a son and 33 percent saying it's better to have a son. Only 8.2 percent responded that having a son is a must.

Five killed in furnace gas leak at steel plant

Five workers suffocated to death on Friday at a steel plant in this port city of Dangjin after gas leaked from a furnace, authorities said. The workers, employed by a subcontractor of Hyundai Steel Co., were found dead at around 2:25 a.m. inside the 8-meter-deep furnace in Dangjin, some 123 kilometers south of Seoul, after argon gas leaked from the furnace, according to the authorities.Though argon is non-toxic, it is denser than air so that it is considered dangerous in closed areas, according to experts. The gas is also hard to detect as it is colorless and odorless. The victims had been putting the final touches on the facility after 10 days of repair work, according to a Hyundai Steel official. "Argon is used in furnaces to prevent the graphite from burning, and it is often injected right before a test run of a furnace," the official said. "The workers were supposed to conduct a test run of the furnace later today, and we are examining why they injected the gas so early." Police said they, along with the local labor administration and Korea Gas Safety Corp., are working on finding
