NK envoy's meeting with Xi Jinping becomes center of attention

North Korea's special envoy's visit to China is drawing international attention with focus being given to whether he will be able to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, diplomatic sources here said Thursday.Choe Ryong-hae, the director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army, flew into Beijing Wednesday as an envoy to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He met with Wang Jiarui, the head of the Communist Party of China's (CPC) central committee's external affairs department, shortly after his arrival.He also toured the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area (BDA) earlier in the day in the company of Liu Jieyi, the vice minister of the International Department of the CPC. Media reports said the North Korean delegation was warmly received by workers at the BDA.Most observers in Beijing said Choe will touch on the country's long-range missile and nuclear program as well as asking for more food and energy aid in the face of frayed bilateral relations caused by the North detonating its third nuclear device on Feb. 12. China countered by not opposing fresh U.N.

SNU grants paternity leave

By Lee Kyung-min Seoul National University (SNU) will grant paternity leaves for undergraduates and graduate students, the university said Thursday. This comes as a measure to better help students deal with the dichotomy of parenting and studying. Starting from this semester, male students with child younger than eight years of age will be able to take a leave of up to one year. Female students can take one-semester or one-year maternity leave separately up to three years. The previous rule for leave of absence was that undergraduates and doctoral students can have it up to three years and graduate students up to two years. The paternity or maternity leave won’t be deducted as part of general leaves. “Students with children have complained that it’s hard to manage studies at school and work at home. TV personality indicted for tracking wife

A popular Hallyu actor and singer Ryu Si-won has been indicted without physical detention for secretly attaching a GPS (global positioning system) on his wife’s car.According to prosecutors, Ryu secretly attached the device in his wife’s Mercedes sedan in May 2011 and installed a tracking devices in his mobile phone to gain information about the activities of his wife, a 29-year-old Cho.Cho asked for the GPS device to be removed in August of that year, following which Ryu slapped her around and called her all kinds of vulgar names.Ryu’s entertainment company said there was no violence between the couple and that the allegations are being made to earn an advantage in a divorce proceeding.

Female body found in singer's car; suicide suspected

The death of a young woman is under investigation after her body was discovered inside a car owned by a pop singer, police said Wednesday.The body was discovered around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday inside the vehicle parked near an apartment building in Gangnam-gu in southern Seoul, according to the Gangnam Police Station.The car is owned by pop singer Son Ho-young, the police said, adding that an empty bottle of sleeping pills and a used briquette were found along with a suicide note."The deceased woman is not a celebrity but an ordinary person who had been dating Son steadily for the past year," the singer's agency, CJ E&M, said.Son returned home after being quizzed by the police, officers said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.Debuting as a member of the popular boy band G.O.D. in 1999, the 33-year-old Son released a solo album in 2006 as the band became inactive. The versatile singer is concurrently working as a TV and musical actor.
