Smart, competitive younger generation asset to Uzbekistan

Since independence the health care system of Uzbekistan has undergone significant changes. Preserving and strengthening the health of its population and raising a younger generation that is harmoniously developed, physically healthy and spiritually mature have been among the Government’s priority tasks. At the initiative of country’s President Islam Karimov, 2014 has been designated in Uzbekistan as the “Year of the Healthy Child” and a relevant state program was adopted. It has been a logical continuation of a socially oriented public policy of the Government of Uzbekistan that had been clearly demonstrated in the names of previous years, including the “Year of the Mother and Child” (2001), “Year of Youth” (2008), “Year of the Harmoniously Developed Generation” (2010) and “Year of the Family” (2012).The current program consists of specific actions that cover all issues pertaining to the birth, raising and education of children, supporting a healthy environment in the family and its economic foundations, and enhan

Uzbekistan welcomes foreign investors

GM factory in Uzbekistan From the outset of Independence, Uzbekistan has been following its own path of development – the Uzbek Model – of transition to a socially oriented market economy based on five key principles developed by country’s President Islam Karimov: the priority of economics over politics; the state is the main reformer; the rule of law; strong social policy; a step-by-step transition to market relations. Thanks to successful implementation of this model, today Uzbekistan has achieved the following milestones:― macro-economic stability, equilibrium of domestic and foreign sectors of economy, growth of currency reserves;― maintaining steady high rates of annual economic growth of over 8 percent on average;― the reduction of aggregate tax burden almost 3 times, while the State is providing additional packages of benefits and preferences to exporting enterprises, small businesses and entities, making investments and introducing new production;― the creation of sustainable banking and finance system with strict observance of Basel

Uzbekistan seeks strong partnership with Korea

Uzbek President Islam Karimov, right, and Korean President Park Geun-hye smiles during a summit in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in June this year.By Bakhtiyor Ibragimov  It is a high privilege for me to address today the esteemed readers of The Korea Times on the occasion of the 23rd Anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence. The foundation of bilateral relations between our states was laid on December 30, 1991, when the Republic of Korea was among the first countries to recognize Uzbekistan’s independence. Subsequently, diplomatic relations were established on January 29, 1992. Ever since, our countries have been engaged in vigorous political dialogue, the intensity of close cooperation can be manifested by the fact that over the past 22 years there have been 13 summit meetings between our heads of state.Within a short period of time, our countries have gained enormous experience in mutually beneficial cooperation in the political, trade-economic, investment and cultural-humanitarian areas that serve as a solid foundation for the further implementation of long-ter

Politicians give gifts from Jindo Island

Both the ruling Saenuri Party and main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) are sourcing their gifts for this month’s Chuseok holiday from Jindo Island, South Jeolla Province, near which the Sewol ferry sank in April. In Korea, political parties often hand out gifts to politicians and officials. By sourcing them from Jindo, the lawmakers called attention to the island’s economy, which has struggled since the tragic incident.Saenuri chairman Kim Moo-sung, for example, sent Jindo abalones to other parliamentarians. The NPAD chose specialties from Jindo as well as Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, home to the high school students aboard the Sewol.Lee Ju-yeong, minister of oceans and fisheries, reportedly sent text messages to lawmakers to think of Jindo when choosing their gifts. Search-and-rescue operations prevented fisherman from working off the island, disrupting the economy. The Sewol capsized near Jindo on April 16, claimed more than 300 lives, most of them students on a field trip to Jeju Island.
