Kookmin University has signed an agreement with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to jointly develop and operate a new master’s degree program in sports education, the school said Tuesday.
The agreement was signed by Kookmin University President Jeong Seung-ryul and FISU Secretary General and CEO Matthias Remund at the university campus in northern Seoul on Monday.
Kookmin University Foundation Chairman Kim Ji-yong and FISU Master Director Delise O’Meally also attended the signing ceremony.
“This agreement marks a meaningful starting point that will expand the connection between international university sports and higher education, extending beyond a conventional institutional partnership,” Jeong said.
“We expect the combination of Kookmin University’s educational capabilities and FISU’s global platform to create synergy in nurturing future leaders in the sports field.”
After the ceremony, officials of the university’s College of Physical Education and the FISU held a working-level meeting to discuss how to launch and run the FISU master’s program.
The university said the agreement is designed to strengthen the global educational foundation encompassing sports, education and international exchanges through collaboration with the FISU, which has an extensive global university sports platform. Kookmin is the only university in Seoul to operate a dedicated college of physical education.
It also noted that the agreement is significant in that it aims to enhance understanding of the international sports field through the implementation of the FISU master’s program and to nurture future sports professionals equipped with academic knowledge and practical expertise.
The university said it plans to expand its international sports education network, provide students with broader opportunities for global learning and exchanges and develop a new education model in the sports field.
The FISU is an international organization representing university sports worldwide. It operates various global sports platforms, including the World University Games, World University Championships and World University Cups.
The biennial World University Games is the largest global multi-sport event for university athletes. The Summer Games attract around 10,000 participants from more than 160 countries, while the Winter Games bring together some 2,500 participants from more than 60 countries.
