An online community user has been accused of spreading rumor that National Assembly Speaker Chung Ui-hwa's eldest son evaded mandatory military service, Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station said Saturday.

The comments, posted Wednesday on notorious far-right website Ilbe, claimed Chung’s eldest son attempted to give up his Korean nationality in 1998, but was rejected by the military manpower agency. The post added he then filed a lawsuit and gave up the nationality in 2001.

Chung’s office, however, denied the allegation, saying he finished the military service and has the Korean nationality.

“(The user) is slandering Chung by using insulting expressions,” said an official from Chung’s side. "The rumor is spreading through the website and social networking.”

Police said they would question those who posted and spread the comments on the Internet.
