A man who helped save more than 10 lives during the Sewol ferry sinking has attempted suicide, according to reports.
Kim Dong-su, 50, attempted to take his life on Thursday because he was unable to overcome the trauma from last year’s disaster, police said.
Jeju Police and Fire Department said Kim’s daughter found him unconscious at 8:43 p.m. in his house on Jeju Island, with markings on his wrists.
Kim’s daughter reported the attempt and Kim was taken to a nearby emergency room.
He was sent home after treatment.
Kim was on board the ferry as a freight driver and several witnesses said he helped carry more than 10 people from the sinking boat to a rescue boat.
Police said Kim had been suffering mentally, physically and financially because of a lack of government compensation following the tragedy that took more than 300 lives on April 16 last year.
