Japanese and Korean K-pop fans clash over Sunny

Listen

Sunny of Girls' Generation

K-pop fans of Girls Generation member Sunny have clashed over a post on Instagram.

The March 1st Movement day, a national holiday commemorating the independence movement against Japanese colonialism in 1919, is also a day to raise Korea’s national flag.

Sunny took to her personal Instagram account to upload a picture of the national flag, the Taegukgi, and wrote the famous Churchill quote, "A nation that forgets its past has no future."

Korean fans welcomed the K-pop celebrity's patriotic gesture, but Japanese fans were unimpressed.

Users wrote in Japanese, "Did you think this way when you were on your Japan tour?" and "Don't ever come to Japan again."

Korean fans had defended Sunny, pointing out that she never said anything about Japan ㅡ simply that it was an important day for Korea to remember.
