Carrying a cup of coffee through the office can sometimes make a mess of your work clothes. But there is a solution: latte drinking lessens the chance of a spill, research has found.
Scientists have discovered that a few layers of bubbles or foam on a drink help prevent it from spilling because the motion of the liquid is dampened.
Researchers at the French National Center for Scientific Research tested and recorded two types of movement: quick jolts and steady rocking. They found the friction between bubbles and the walls of the container helped keep drinks from spilling.
“While I was studying for my Ph.D. in the south of France, we were in a pub, and we noticed that when we were carrying a pint of Guinness, which is a very foamy beer, the sloshing almost didn't happen at all,” Dr. Sauret from the French National Center for Scientific Research was quoted as saying by Daily Mail.
