Jeju Island will complete a bicycle path around the island this year, district officials said on Saturday.

The 218-kilometer path is a five-year project that started in 2010.

“The path will connect the coastlines that have not been connected before, with an additional path in Seogwipo of 48.9 kilometers, and costing more than 4.4 billion won,” an official said, adding that the path was expected to be completed in July.

There will also be a walking path 1.5 meters to 2 meters wide.

The Jeju city section will be 105.8 kilometers, while the Seogwipo sector will cover 112.1 kilometers — a total of 217.9 kilometers.

Various booths are to be stationed along the path, including traditional public phone booths and other photo zones.

“Once the bicycle path is complete, we anticipate a high rate of tourists to visit us — possibly up to 150,000 people a day from all over the world to cycle around our island,” a city official said..

The official said the path would not only boost Jeju’s economy, but would also help the island rebrand itself as an eco-friendly tourist attraction.
