Movie monster to lurk near Han River

A sculpture of the monstrous creature from the 2006 hit movie “The Host” is being displayed at Seoul’s Yeouido Han River Park, city officials said Wednesday.

The film, directed by Bong Joon-ho, features a monster created as a result of chemicals being dumped into the Han River. The hideous creature emerges from the water and terrorizes the city.

The sculpture is three meters tall and 10 meters high, officials said. It is located between Mapo Bridge and Wonhyo Bridge.

"We would like to utilize the Han River as a colorful and active stage, by displaying the monster,” an official told Yonhap News Agency, adding that the film had made a lasting impression on mainstream culture.

The city will hold a contest for the best photos taken in front of the sculpture. Contestants can apply at the website of the Hangang Storytelling Office (blog.naver.com/hangangstory).

The winner in the “Best Pose” category will receive a tablet computer. The winner in the “Best Angle” category will receive a Polaroid camera. Two honorable mentions will be taking home an iPod Shuffle.

Applications will be accepted until Jan. 15.
