Korea’s highest-profile gay actor Hong Seok-cheon will get married only when the public is in favor of it.
The comedian, 44, who stirred the nation when he came out in 2000 and then stayed below the radar for some years until resurfacing a few years ago, made the comment during a cameo appearance on JTBC’s “With You,” a reality show where six celebrities pretend to be three married couples.
“My turn hasn’t shown up yet because I rarely get a good opportunity,” said Hong, who has said repeatedly he would like a romantic partner. “I think the time will come only when the public allows it.”
Hong’s coming out was a breakthrough for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in Korea, where sexual minorities are harshly stigmatized.
Hong owns several high-end restaurants in Itaewon, Seoul, and appears regularly on talk shows.
