Don't miss 'blood moon' eclipse tonight

A “blood moon” will be visible across large parts of Korea tonight.

A partial lunar eclipse will start at 6:14 p.m. (KST) followed by a total lunar eclipse from 7:24 p.m., the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) said yesterday.

Tonight’s eclipse will reach its peak at 7:54 p.m.

During a total lunar eclipse, sunlight reaches the moon after traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere. Only light with longer wavelengths – i.e. red light -- can pass through the Earth’s atmosphere, the moon is cast in a reddish hue.

The KASI will hold a moon-watching event “2014 Korea Star Fest – Moon fest for a month” in 36 locations nationwide. For information, visit www.kasi.re.kr.

The last total eclipse observed in Korea was three years ago, and the next total eclipse will occur in April next year.
