Councilman jailed for egg attack on mayor

A city councilor in Changwon who threw an egg at Mayor Ahn Sang-soo was arrested Tuesday and will stand trial.

Kim Seong-il has been under investigation following a Sept. 16 incident in which he threw two eggs at Ahn during a council meeting over the location of a new baseball stadium.

Following the incident, which went viral around the world, prosecutors requested an arrest warrant, which the Changwon District Court issued today.

The mayor earlier said it would take him two weeks to recover from his injuries, but asked the court not to jail Kim.

However, the court said Kim had used violence to express his opinion, “undermining democratic principles,” Yonhap news agency reported.
