'Illegal expat' caught hiding in fridge

A Chinese man was caught after trying to hide inside a fridge loaded on a pickup truck to get past border patrol in Jeju Island.

A Chinese man with an expired Korean visa tried to evade border patrol by hiding inside a fridge but failed, Munhwa Ilbo said Tuesday.

On Monday at around 3:50 p.m., the man, 35, stashed himself inside a fridge and tried to get past security at the Jeju Harbor with the help of a pickup truck driver, 40, who carried the fridge. But they were caught red-handed at the scene, and were taken to immigration service for further investigation.

The report said the man had entered Jeju Island in 2012 with a short-term Korean visa he had acquired the same year. He worked hard labor since then, and tried to move to other districts to remain under the radar.
