Police booked a man for wreaking havoc in public by slashing his own stomach, cursing the government for the disastrous post-Sewol tragedy control, Segye Ilbo said Sunday.
On Saturday evening, Yoon, 57, found himself in a public square in front of a joint memorial altar set up at the Ansan Olympic Museum Gymnasium for the students killed in the accident.
He took out a concealed 12-centimeter-long knife and slashed his stomach several times. During his self-immolation, he enunciated that Park Geun-hye’s government is not dependable, and that his pain is incomparable to those of the families of the missing victims of the sunken ferry.
Yoon was restrained by a policeman from Gojan police substation and taken to the Korea University Ansan Hospital. The damage was not life threatening, the report said.
Police found from Yoon two extra knives of a similar size to the one he used at the scene and a gas pistol. Police plan to arrest him on criminal charges.
The report quoted police as saying Yoon appeared drunk and was confirmed as a dog breeder from Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. The reason why he showed up at the scene remains so far unknown.
