A wealthy man had showered extravagant gifts on his ex-girlfriend who used to work in the entertainment business in 2003.

They included a mink coat (25 million won), Hermes Birkin bag (14 million won), Cartier necklace (12 million won), seven Louis Vuitton bags (14.8 million won), three Cartier rings (14.4 million won), two Louis Vuitton apparels (11.8 million won), Loewe bag (5.7 million won), Celine bag (2.1 million won), Chanel bag (1.4 million won), Chanel wallet, Dior lingerie, a car and cosmetics.

Over a period of six years, he provided her with millions of won monthly and bought her 80 items worth a total of 260 million won.

In addition, he paid her credit card bills and when she went out of town, he paid for her room charges and skin treatment, taking the total to 350 million won.

However, they broke up after six years and three months and the woman married another man.

Is he able to reclaim his money?

He first accused her of fraud by claiming that she received his financial support by feigning to marry him.

The prosecution rejected his accusation for lack of evidence and he filed a lawsuit against his ex-girlfriend for compensation.

However, the prosecution dismissed his claim, saying, “Testimony by others that the woman had swindled money from the accuser without intending to marry him does not qualify as evidence.”

As a result, compensation is not necessary as fraud is not recognized in this case.

According to the court, although the case raises moral questions, she is not obliged to give back what she received as the couple had not reached a consensual marriage.
