Ssangyong protest site burnt

Listen

Investigators examine the remains of tents destroyed by a fire on the sidewalk at Deoksu Palace in downtown Seoul, Sunday. The fire broke out early in the morning among tents set up by former Ssangyong Motor employees and civic group members, who have been demonstrating for years against the company’s massive layoffs in 2009. Police apprehended a man who is suspected of setting the fire and are questioning him. The company has made 2,600 workers redundant, and more than 20, including family members, have committed suicide or died of diseases since the layoffs. / Korea Times photo by Hong In-gi
