A man in his 40s reportedly kept the dead body of his housemate just so he can collect on her welfare payments.
According to the police in Incheon Monday, the corpse of a 64-year-old was found in a multiple unit housing facility following a report by the landlord that foul odor was coming out of the apartment rented by the dead 64-year-old Kim and an unemployed 48-year-old Cho.
“Kim apparently died on Oct. 21 last year of lung cancer but Kim report her death to the authorities.
He said the reason was that he did not know how he could continue making a living,” one detective said.
He said the apparent reason why he did not file the death report was to continue receiving her welfare payments and thus decided to keep corpse in the apartment.
Investigations found that Kim received a total of 870,000 won ($780) in welfare coverage between November and December as she lay dead in her apartment.
