If a person unilaterally calls off a wedding because he or she did not accurately know the would-be spouses job, the responsibility lies with both parties, a court recently ruled.

The Busan District Court ordered a compensation of 490,000 won ($450) in favor of a 26-year-old man who filed a suit against the family of his promised 22-year-old bride.

The man filed the suit in March for compensatory payments of 10 million won ($9,000) because of the psychological damage he suffered after the family of his bride-to-be called off their wedding in March, one month before they were scheduled to walk down the aisle.

On the part of the woman, the family said they had every right to cancel the matrimony because the man “fraudulently” made it out as if he worked for a moving company.

The presiding judge said, “While the bride’s family should have taken more care to check into the job and earnings of the man she was planning to marry the bridegroom also should have disclosed his personal details to the in-laws more accurately.

He ruled that there needs to be no compensation for the bed and kitchenware htat they bought for their home since the man has ownership but the cost of refurbishing the apartment and the pre-filming of their wedding of 980,000 won ($490,000) should be shared.
