Relations between Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Korea date back more than 1,000 years but, in the modern era, the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1962.
This year Iran and Korea will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their relations. On this auspicious occasion, the two countries will host various cultural and artistic festivals as well as celebratory programs.
Iran is the second largest exporter of oil and holds 7 percent of the world energy reserves. Iran has always been a reliable and stable supplier of oil to Korea.
Korea has likewise played an active role in implementing various development projects in Iran and enjoys a significant share in Iran’s goods and services market. The two countries have jointly invested in a variety of industrial areas, such as auto manufacturing, home appliances and electronics.
Two-way trade has undergone a historical increase, surging to $18.5 billion in 2011 from $11.5 billion in 2010 ― a 60 percent increase in just 12 months. Iran and Korea will expand their relations in different economic, scientific, political and cultural fields.
Considering the two countries long-standing and friendly relations, predicated on mutual respect and interests, Iran and Korea should not allow other countries to interfere in their interactions. They should defy any such influence which may harm the progress of the two nations.
This year marks a “Golden Jubilee,” as Iran-Korea cooperation expands in the fields of economy and energy. A growing relationship has been a natural outcome of interdependency.
More attention should be paid to the cultural and historical aspects of our relations. Perhaps, these intangible aspects have been overshadowed by the boom in economic transactions between Korea and Iran.
Cultural ties between Iran and Korea are as rich and ancient as the Silk Road. These historical connections are supported by first-hand materials and other essential references in both nations.
Overall relations between the two countries will remain grounded on a strong foundation to support sustainable cooperation in the long run.
