Aliens Among Us

Lord Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal of the United Kingdom, says aliens could be among us and we may not be able to recognize them.

"They could be staring us in the face and we just don't recognize them," the Sun quoted him as saying.

Rees, who is also the president of the Royal Society, continued: "The problem is that we're looking for something very much like us, assuming that they at least have something like the same mathematics and technology.

"I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms that we can't conceive.

"Just as a chimpanzee can't understand quantum theory, it could be there are aspects of reality which are beyond the capacity of our brains."

Rees was speaking shortly after hosting the first conference on the possibility of alien life in the Royal Society's 350-year history.

외계인이 인간과 함께 존재한다?

영국 왕립 천문학자인 마틴 리스 경은 외계인은 우리와 함께 있으나, 우리가 그들을 인식 못하는 것일 수도 있다고 말했다.

선지는 그의 말을 인용해 "외계인들이 인간을 주시하고 있으나 우리가 인식 못하는 것"이라고 전했다.

왕립학회 의장이기도 한 리스 경은 "문제는 수학이나 기술을 사용하는 인간과 비슷한 외계인을 찾고 있다는 것"이라면서 "나는 우리가 인지할 수 없는 형태의 삶과 지적 영역이 존재한다고 본다"고 주장했다.

리스 경은 또한 "이것은 침팬지가 양자이론을 이해할 수 없듯이 인간의 인식능력을 뛰어넘는 실재가 존재할 가능성이 있다는 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

리스 경은 350주년을 맞은 왕립학회가 주최한 외계 생명체의 존재 가능성에 대한 첫 번째 회의 도중 이같은 언급을 했다.
