HS Magok District, An Eco Energy Town of the Future

Listen

Located in Seoul's Gangseo-gu, Magok district is to get an environmentally friendly makeover with a new name (Eco Energy Town of the Future). The district is to transform into an energy efficient zone that'll boast some of the world's best technology.

The new heating and air conditioning system will reduce fuel and energy consumption by 50%. In addition to the state of the art fuel efficient system, 40% of the area's energy will be recycled.

The new buildings in the area are designed to reduce energy consumption by 1/3 of average buildings. Furthermore, a solar energy producing facility with the ability to produce 10MW of energy is to help with the city's efforts to decrease greenhouse gas production.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The city has also developed a system to use energy produced by river water. The energy has the ability to provide heat to approximately 23,000 homes during the heart of the frigid winter months.

Some of the energy produced while scrapping materials are to be put to better use in the Magok district.

The fuel efficient buildings in the district are to make good use of recycled energy as well as solar energy. The "Eco-Schools" in the district are to use solar energy from the roof of the building for energy use within the building. The R&D center in the district is to be used to further develop methods to decrease energy consumption in the area. The area is expected to attract domestic and foreign research centers.

Environmentally Friendly Role Model

The "Eco Energy Town of the Future" is expected to serve as a role model to many cities around the world that are hard at work to reduce energy consumption. The Magok district is to be presented at the upcoming C40 Summit in Seoul.

The facilities and technologies developed in Magok district is to be implemented to newly developed areas within the city to help reduce environmental pollution. The current project is a proactive first step towards a transformation from one of the most energy consuming and greenhouse emitting cities in the world to an environmentally friendly city. The actual changes are to take place some time next year after proper steps are taken as preparation.
