Special counsel files for detention warrant for ex-President Yoon

A special counsel team said Wednesday it has filed for a warrant to forcibly bring in former President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning over allegations of election meddling. The request was made shortly after Yoon defied for the second time special counsel Min Joong-ki's summons to appear for questioning. "The special counsel notified former President Yoon, who failed to appear yesterday, to appear at 10 a.m. today, but he again did not show up without giving any reasons," assistant special counsel Oh Jeong-hee said during a press briefing. Yoon is currently under arrest over his failed attempt to impose martial law in December. An aide told Yonhap News Agency he was unable to comply with the summons Wednesday because he continues to have health issues, with difficulty moving and even sitting. In the event the warrant is issued, the special counsel team is expected to send an assistant special counsel and a prosecutor to the Seoul Detention Center, where Yoon is being held, to physically bring him in. Min's team is tasked with investigating corruption allegations surrounding Yoon's wife, for

Special counsel raids minor party leader's office again in probe into ex-first lady

A special counsel team again raided the office of minor party leader Lee Jun-seok on Wednesday as part of its investigation into former first lady Kim Keon Hee's alleged election meddling. Investigators from special counsel Min Joong-ki's team searched the office of the Reform Party (RP) leader on the National Assembly compound for the second time to secure additional documents and computer files. The first raid took place Monday, targeting Lee's office and his homes in Seoul's northern Nowon district and Hwaseong, south of the capital. Min's team is looking into allegations Lee colluded with former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, Kim, to meddle in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections. Lee was the leader of the then ruling People Power Party at the time. Yoon and Kim are suspected of receiving free opinion polls from self-proclaimed power broker Myung Tae-kyun ahead of the 2022 presidential election in exchange for the nomination of former PPP Rep. Kim Young-sun as a candidate for the by-elections. Lee is also suspected of suggesting to Myung the appointment

The Daejeon Seobu Police Station said the man, whose identity is withheld, was put under emergency detention on murder charges at around noon. Forged IDs used in Korean exam cheating scheme

Several Chinese nationals were caught using forged alien registration cards (ARC) to take the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) on behalf of others, authorities said Monday, raising concerns about organized cheating in high-stakes language exams. According to police, a Chinese woman in her 30s was arrested on July 13 at Soongsil University in Seoul’s Dongjak District after being found in possession of a counterfeit ARC during the 101st session of the TOPIK. The exam proctor grew suspicious while examining her identification and alerted authorities, who apprehended her at the scene. Investigators later uncovered evidence on her smartphone indicating communication with an exam broker to facilitate the fraud. Authorities suspect she was paid to take the test on behalf of another individual. Administered by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education, the TOPIK is designed to assess and certify Korean language abilities for non-native speakers, mostly foreign nationals seeking to enter universities, get a job or secure long-term visas in Korea. Incheon shooting suspect referred to prosecution, remains silent when questioned by reporters

A 62-year-old man who fatally shot his son with a homemade shotgun after a birthday celebration and allegedly attempted to kill other family members has been handed over to prosecutors. Incheon Yeonsu Police said Wednesday that the suspect, identified only as A, was referred to the prosecution in custody on charges of murder, attempted murder, violation of the Firearms, Knives and Explosives Control Act and preparation for arson of an inhabited building. A, who was detained at the Nonhyeon Police Station in Incheon, was escorted out of his cell around 9 a.m. When asked by reporters why he had killed his son, he remained silent, staring at the ground and avoiding eye contact. He did not respond to follow-up questions about whether feelings of alienation from his family had driven him to commit the crime, why he chose to act on his birthday, or whether he regretted killing his son and attempting to kill his daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Wearing a cap and a mask to obscure his face, A kept his cuffed hands covered with a cloth as he entered a police van. Police arrested A on July 21 and

Ex-spy chief acknowledges Yoon's outburst during questioning in Marine death probe

Former National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director Cho Tae-yong has acknowledged former President Yoon Suk Yeol flew into a rage when he was briefed on the results of an initial probe into the death of a Marine in 2023, reversing his yearslong denial, legal sources said Wednesday. Cho made the admission during questioning by special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon's team Tuesday as a suspect over allegations of government interference in the Marine Corps' investigation into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun in July 2023, according to the sources. Chae was swept away by an overflowing stream while on a search mission for torrential rain victims. Cho was one of the senior officials who attended a meeting that month when Yoon allegedly erupted in anger upon hearing the preliminary probe results that found a senior Marine commander responsible for Chae's death. The case centers on allegations the investigation results were later changed to clear the initial suspects of responsibility. Cho had previously claimed at the National Assembly in August 2023 that the meeting did not involve a briefing on Chae

Incheon shooting a ‘premeditated crime driven by delusion,’ police say

A man who shot and killed his adult son with a homemade firearm during a birthday gathering in Incheon was driven by long-held delusions and meticulously planned the crime for nearly a year, police said Monday. The 62-year-old suspect, surnamed A, is accused of fatally shooting his 33-year-old son and firing additional rounds at a fleeing domestic helper at an apartment complex in Songdo on July 20. In a media briefing, Incheon police announced Tuesday that A will be referred to prosecutors on Wednesday on multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder and violations of the Firearms, Swords, and Explosives Control Act. Police concluded that the crime was premeditated, not spontaneous. Investigators say A harbored deep delusions, believing he was still part of the family after divorcing his ex-wife in 1999. He also felt alienated after his son married in 2015, claiming his family "conspired to isolate" him. “He believed his ex-wife and son colluded to entrap him,” an officer said. Investigators said A began preparing the homemade weapon in August 2023 after watching instructional

Jeju City employee accused of embezzling 600 million won from garbage bag sales

An employee of Jeju City has been accused of embezzling hundreds of millions of won from the sale of government-issued garbage bags, prompting an official apology from the mayor and a vow by the provincial government to strengthen oversight. Jeju City said Monday that it has referred a public service worker in his 30s in the sanitation department to the police for investigation. The worker is suspected of stealing more than 600 million won ($430,000) by pocketing cash collected from designated vendors after delivering volume-based garbage disposal bags. According to the city, the suspect marked the transactions as canceled in the system while keeping the money. The fraud, believed to have continued for years, came to light only recently when a vendor that had paid in cash asked for a reissued receipt. The transaction showed as canceled in the system, prompting a broader review. Further inspection revealed multiple similar cases where the bags were delivered, but the payments were never recorded in the city’s accounts. At a press conference on Monday, Jeju Mayor Kim Wan-geun issued a for

Amount of confiscated drugs hits all-time high in H1: customs agency

The amount of illegal drugs seized reached an all-time six-month high in the first half of the year, with international drug rings increasingly turning their eyes to Asia amid tightening border control in the United States, the customs agency said Tuesday. Korea cracked down on 617 trafficking cases, involving a combined 2,680 kilograms of illegal substances, in the January-June period, according to the Korea Customs Service (KCS). The number of intercepted cases jumped 70 percent from the same period last year, while the amount of drugs seized jumped ninefold over the cited period, the agency said. The amount confiscated in the first half is enough to supply close to 90 million people simultaneously, it added. Authorities said they saw a rise in large-scale drug smuggling attempts originating from Central and South America. In particular, it intercepted two cases of drug trafficking attempts — originating from Peru in April and Ecuador in May — seizing a total of 2,290 kilograms of cocaine. The agency explained that drug trafficking organizations operating in Central and South America

Lee urges stronger safety measures to root out fatal industrial accidents

President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday called for stronger workplace safety measures to prevent fatal industrial accidents and tougher punishments for violations. Lee made the remarks during a Cabinet meeting that was aired live, following the fifth fatal workplace accident this year at a construction site operated by POSCO E&C, a subsidiary of steelmaker POSCO. A worker in his 60s was killed Monday after being caught in a drilling machine at the company's construction site in Uiryeong County, South Gyeongsang Province. "When fatal accidents occur in the same way, it ultimately amounts to condoning these deaths," he said. "To put it bluntly, in legal terms, it could be considered murder through willful negligence." Lee said the repeated accidents reflect an attitude that such deaths are inevitable, calling the situation "truly heartbreaking." "These are accidents that could have been fully anticipated, yet no preventive measures were taken," Lee said, adding that he would consider visiting a POSCO E&C site in person. On Friday, Lee visited a bread factory belonging to SPC Samlip where six work
