Another Korean tourist falls to death in Thailand in two days

/ Captured from the Bangkok PostBy Park Si-sooThai police are investigating the death of a South Korean man at an apartment building in the beach resort of Pattaya early Wednesday.The man, whose name remains unknown, is said to have fallen to his death from the building’s 37th floor about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. His body was reportedly found on the walkway to the swimming pool of the 42-story condominium in Soi Wong Amat, in Bang Lamung, according to the Bangkok Post, a local English daily.A condominium employee reportedly told police she heard what sounded like “something hitting the ground.”According to police, the man, 40, checked in to the hotel on June 20 and was waiting for his wife from South Korea. He reportedly returned drunk to the condominium before the accident.His body was sent to Bang Lamung Hospital for an autopsy.The accident came only two days after another Korean man fell to his death in an elevator shaft at a 20-story condominium in Bangkok after a quarrel with his girlfriend.His naked body was found at the bottom of a lift well in the Aspire co

Shim Cheon-woo, left, and Kang Jeong-im  By Ko Dong-hwanChangwon Seobu police are hunting two people who allegedly abducted and killed a woman.The suspects, Shim Cheon-woo, 31, and Kang Jeong-im, 36, allegedly targeted the woman, 47, who was leaving a golf practice facility in Uichang-gu, Changwon, in South Gyeongsang Province, about 8:30 p.m. on June 24. A man, identified as Shim, 29, also was involved, police said.They said they caught Shim hiding under a car in an apartment parking lot in Haman, in the same province, about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. They have sought an arrest warrant for him on a murder charge.Police found the victim’s body in a bag under Jinsu Bridge in Jinju about 6 p.m. the same day. It was sent to the National Forensic Service.Police have seized an SUV used in the crime. They put the suspects on a wanted list Wednesday, with a 5 million won ($4,390) bounty.The crime’s motive remains unknown.

Prosecutors raid opposition party members' offices over fabrication case

Prosecutors raided the offices and homes of two members of a minor opposition party Wednesday as part of an investigation into false allegations they made against President Moon Jae-in's son.During the election campaign, the People's Party claimed that his son Moon Joon-yong was unfairly hired at the Korea Employment Information Service in late 2006 when Moon was a senior presidential secretary.The party Monday apologized and said its member Lee You-mi manipulated materials to cook up the false allegation. Lee was taken into custody later that day. Petya ransomware monitored in S. Korea

The Petya ransomware, which struck Russia and Europe earlier this week, was also observed in South Korea, industry sources said Wednesday, casting concern over local cybersecurity.While the Korea Internet & Security Agency said no official reports have been made to the organization so far, several Internet users claimed their computer was struck by the latest ransomware.Ransomware refers to malware that locks up files on a computer with encryption until the victims pay a certain amount of money to hackers.Petya, first detected earlier in 2016, demands users to pay the virtual currency bitcoin worth $300 to recover their files.South Korea earlier suffered damage from ransomware "WannaCry" in May, which struck around 20 local companies. By Ko Dong-hwanPolice have charged a man in his 80s with murdering his Vietnamese daughter-in-law for not giving him money and treating him without respect.On June 2, the man, identified by his surname Kim, 83, stabbed the woman in the neck and back while she was sleeping, according to the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors’ Office on Monday.The attack happened at around 4 a.m. in an apartment in Seongbuk-gu, northern Seoul, where they lived.The victim’s husband, 48, found her body the same day. Police arrested the father-in-law at the scene.Kim reportedly told police his daughter-in-law, who migrated to Korea 10 years ago, and his son treated him badly.

S. Korean man shot to death, another seriously injured by armed robbers in Guatemala

A group of armed robbers shot to death the chief of a South Korean company's factory and seriously injured another worker on Sunday after storming their lodgings in the city of Villa Nueva, south of Guatemala City, the South Korean Embassy in Guatemala City said Monday.The embassy said the three armed men broke into the house where the two South Korean workers lived around 11:40 a.m.According to embassy officials, police believe that they hit the worker, who was at the house's entrance with a metal bar, and shot the factory chief, who was upstairs, killing him.The robbers ran away after commandeering two cars parked in front of the house, they said. One of the three suspects, who was driving one of the two cars, was caught after the injured worker tipped off police. The two other robbers riding the other vehicle are still at large.The injury of the worker who received medical treatment after the robbery is not life-threatening, according to the officials.At least four people including a local woman are believed to have been involved in the robbery. By Park Si-sooA South Korean man has fallen to his death down an elevator shaft at a 20-storey condominium in Bangkok after a severe quarrel with his girlfriend, according to local media.Bangkok Post reported Monday his naked body was found at the bottom of a lift well at Aspire condominium on Sukhumivit soi 48 on Monday morning. Local police reportedly said he was a 33-year-old South Korean tourist.The couple reportedly stayed in the room of their Korean friend on the 8th floor during their vacation there.Bangkok Post reported the couple had an argument and the man stormed out of the room naked. In a fit of anger, the daily said, he attacked the building, slamming the door of the freight elevator with a fire extinguisher until the bottom section of the door dropped open.He tried to duck through the opening, and fell down the shaft, police told the newspaper.

Rights watchdog looks into 'gay soldier hunt'

By Kim Bo-eunThe nation’s human rights watchdog has begun an investigation into alleged rights abuses in a “gay soldier hunt” conducted by the Army earlier this year.The National Human Rights Commission of Korea said the Center for Military Human Rights Korea (CMHRK) filed a petition on April 25, and that it began an investigation last month.The CMHRK claimed in April that Army Chief of Staff Gen. Jang Jun-gyu ordered the hunt for homosexual soldiers, based on the military penal code, which bans homosexual acts.The search followed an investigation of an Army captain who posted a video of him having sex with another male soldier.The military court sentenced him to a six-month prison term with a one-month suspension on May 24.The Military Criminal Act states the act of “sodomy” can be punishable with up to a two-year prison term.Army officers began the search after obtaining information from the  captain.The CMHRK claimed the search put 40 to 50 soldiers on the list. US soldier accused of rape in Gangnam

By You Soo-sunAn American soldier faces a charge for sexual assault, the Gangnam Police Station said Monday. The soldier, part of the United States Forces Korea stationed at Osan Air Base in Gyeonggi Province, allegedly raped a woman after taking her to a hotel at 7:30 a.m. near a club where they met in Gangnam, April 1.According to police, the woman had been intoxicated when she was taken to the hotel and then raped. She reported the incident to the police the same day, claiming she believed she was raped.  After about a month-long police investigation, in which the police analyzed video footage from the club and hotel, the police identified the soldier as the culprit. The police summoned the suspect for questioning June 17 and indicted him June 20, following the protocol of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), a mutual defense treaty between Korea and the U.S.Police said they “took DNA tests prior to the indictment through a search and seizure warrant.”They said the suspect denied the accusation during questioning.
