Appellate court upholds suspended prison terms for Taiwanese duo over US military aircraft filming

An appellate court sentenced two Taiwanese nationals to suspended prison terms Monday for illegally filming U.S. military aircraft during an air show in May. The Suwon District Court upheld a lower court ruling of 1 1/2 years in prison, suspended by three years, for the two suspects, each in their 40s and 60s. "The photos taken by the defendants were all confiscated, making it unlikely they will be leaked externally," the bench said in its ruling. "Since their apprehension in May, they have been held in custody for some time ... likely giving them sufficient time to reflect on their wrongdoing." The Taiwanese nationals were indicted on charges of attending an air show at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, on May 10, without authorization, and illegally taking around a dozen photos of U.S. military aircraft and facilities. The U.S. military had banned citizens of certain nations, including China and Taiwan, from attending the show.

Special counsel expected to indict ex-President Yoon this week over alleged interference in Marine death case

The special counsel investigating the 2023 death of a Marine is expected to indict former President Yoon Suk Yeol this week on charges of interfering with a military probe into the case, according to a special prosecutor Monday. Yoon has been questioned by the special counsel over suspicions that he ordered the presidential office and the defense ministry to reverse the initial findings of a military investigation into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, in order to relieve a then Marine commander of responsibility. Special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon's team has no plan to further question Yoon and will conclude its probe this week, assistant special counsel Choung Min-young said during a press briefing. The late Marine died in July 2023 after being swept away in a swollen stream during a search mission for victims of heavy rains without wearing a life vest or other safety equipment. The special counsel is looking to file the indictment Thursday or Friday. Charges will also formally be brought against ex-military and other officials implicated in the case, including former Defense Minister Lee J

Special counsel requests 3-yr sentence for retired general in martial law probe

A special counsel team on Monday demanded an imprisonment of three years for retired Army Maj. Gen. Noh Sang-won indicted for collecting the personal information of military intelligence officers in connection with last year's martial law. Special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team made the request during Noh's hearing at the Seoul Central District Court, arguing his collection of military officers' personal information was a preemptive preparation for former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law imposition last December. Noh, a former commander of the Defense Intelligence Command (DIC), is accused of receiving military intelligence, including personal information of DIC agents, from military commanders between September and December last year in order to create an organization to investigate allegations of election fraud. The special counsel team also suspects that Noh accepted 20 million won ($13,700) in cash and department store gift certificates worth a total of 6 million won between August and September last year from a brigadier general and a colonel in exchange for his promise to help th

Gov't launches task force targeting illegal fund transfers, currency smuggling

The government has established a special task force to crack down on illegal fund transfers and money laundering linked to transnational crimes, such as drug trafficking and voice phishing, the customs agency said Monday. The task force aims to prevent overseas transfer of criminals' illegal profits through unauthorized remittances, currency smuggling and money laundering amid a recent surge in crimes targeting Korean nationals overseas, according to the Korea Customs Service. The 126-member team plans to conduct large-scale investigations into virtual asset-based fund transfer crimes by using suspicious transaction reports (STRs) provided by the Financial Intelligence Unit. Authorities will also strengthen inspections of travelers from high-risk countries at airports and ports to prevent illegal currency transfers, while cracking down on the import of counterfeit bills and other financial instruments. To detect money laundering violations, the agency will identify individuals and companies likely involved in illicit financial activity and launch probes through analysis of trade transact

Correctional officer accused of demanding money from singer Kim Ho-joong over false transfer claim

A correctional officer at Korea’s only private prison is under investigation for allegedly demanding 30 million won ($22,200) from trot singer Kim Ho-joong in exchange for helping arrange his transfer to the facility — a claim authorities say is false. The Ministry of Justice said the officer, whose name was not released publicly, could face disciplinary action depending on the result of the probe. According to the ministry on Sunday, the Seoul Regional Correctional Headquarters is investigating allegations that the officer asked Kim for money in September, saying, “I helped you get into Somang Correctional Institution.” Kim rejected the request and reported the incident to another prison officer, the ministry said. Kim, who was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for a hit-and-run drunk driving incident in Seoul’s Gangnam District last May, was initially held at Seoul Detention Center before being transferred to Somang Correctional Institution in August. He was found guilty of causing the accident and having his manager turn himself in on his behalf. The justice mi

Police request arrest warrant for truck driver over deadly crash at market

Police said Friday they requested a warrant to arrest a truck driver accused of causing a deadly crash in a traditional market near Seoul the previous day that killed two people and injured 19 others. The accident occurred at Jeil Market in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, late Thursday morning, when the 67-year-old driver's 1-ton truck plowed through the market's narrow passage for more than 130 meters. Of the 21 casualties, only two are market vendors, and the remaining 19 are customers. The truck was found to have reversed 1 to 2 meters before speeding 132 meters down the market passage before coming to a halt, according to the Bucheon Ojeong Police Station, which filed the arrest warrant request. Police also confirmed through the vehicle's pedal dashcam that the driver stepped on the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal at the time of the accident. The driver is known to have suffered from chronic diseases, including moyamoya, a rare brain disorder, but he reportedly claimed that his ailments have nothing to do with driving and do not interfere with driving at all. Unification Church leader files for bail

Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja has requested release on bail, allegedly citing health concerns, judicial officials said Friday. Han filed the request with the Seoul Central District Court on Thursday and a date for the bail hearing has not yet been scheduled, they said. Han has been in custody since September on multiple charges, including bribery, illegal political donations and destruction of evidence. She was granted temporary release from detention last week to undergo eye surgery and then requested its extension for health reasons, but the Seoul court rejected the request. The judicial officials speculate that health reasons may be a major factor in Han's bail request due to her recent surgery.

Special counsel estimates 2,000 Unification Church members recruited to PPP in 2023

A special counsel team investigating alleged collusion between the Unification Church and former first lady Kim Keon Hee has estimated the number of church believers who joined the then ruling People Power Party (PPP) ahead of its 2023 leadership election to be around 2,000, judicial officials said Thursday. The estimate was disclosed by special counsel Min Joong-ki's team on Nov. 7, when it additionally indicted Kim, shaman Jeon Seong-bae and Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja on charges of violating the Political Parties Act. Min's team concluded that Kim and Jeon conspired to recruit a large number of Unification Church members to support a specific candidate in the PPP leadership election in 2023 in exchange for offering government policy favors and proportional representation seats in the National Assembly to the church. The team also suspects that the recruitment plan proceeded with the consent of Han and a former church official surnamed Yun. The Political Parties Act criminalizes the provision of benefits to campaign officials and others for the purpose of having a specific per
