Celebrity chef faces trial on drug smuggling, use charges

By Park Si-soo Lee Chan-ohCelebrity chef Lee Chan-oh has been indicted for alleged drug smuggling and use, prosecutors said on Friday. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office is handling the case. Lee, 34, avoided detention as the court rejected the prosecution's request for an arrest warrant for lack of evidence. The chef is suspected of having smuggled cannabis, also known as marijuana, in October and smoking it “multiple times.”The first hearing of Lee's trial will be held on June 15 at the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul. Lee earned fame after featuring in the popular cooking show “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator.”

Lee Myung-hee / YonhapPolice said Thursday that they are seeking an arrest warrant for the wife of Korean Air Chairman Cho Yang-ho on charges of verbal and physical violence against construction workers, company employees and others under her control.Police accused Lee Myung-hee, 69, of habitually assaulting, insulting and injuring people by taking advantage of her powerful status. Lee allegedly perpetrated 24 cases of violence against 11 people between August 2011 and March this year, officials said.The warrant request came after police questioned Lee for 15 hours on Monday and for 11 hours on Wednesday.Lee allegedly hurled a pair of pruning shears at a security guard at her home in Seoul for failing to take care of the house's door properly. She was also accused of kicking her chauffeur on the street for making a mistake, and shoving and cursing at construction workers hired for a hotel expansion project.Lee was pressed with seven counts of charges, officials said.Some of the charges, such as special injury and special assault, are punishable even if the victims reach a settlement

/ YonhapProsecution investigators raided the headquarters of Korean Air on Thursday as part of an investigation into allegations of tax evasion and other charges involving the family of Chairman Cho Yang-ho.About 30 investigators seized documents and other evidential materials from offices at the flag carrier's headquarters in western Seoul as part of an investigation into suspicions that the Cho family failed to pay taxes.The investigation came after tax authorities in Seoul filed an official complaint with the prosecution, accusing the Cho family of failing to pay taxes when Cho inherited some overseas assets from his late father Cho Choong-hoon.Prosecutors have also detected suspicious money flows in bank accounts of the Cho family and related people and are looking into suspicions that the family could have embezzled company money to create slush funds worth more than 20 billion won ($18 million). Conflict deepens over 'abuse of judiciary'
