Man threatens to set himself alight to prevent daughter's divorce

By Park Si-soo A man in his 60s attempted to set himself alight to head off his daughter's divorce, police said Thursday. Police caught the man, surnamed Kim, 61, at a mill house in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, on Wednesday. He had poured gasoline over himself and threatened to ignite it, yelling “Divorce will destroy my daughter's life.” The mill house was run by his daughter's parents-in-law. Police found that the woman faces a divorce suit for unidentified domestic issues. The man told police he did the threatening act in a fit of anger after learning a divorce suit was filed against his daughter.

Seoul International School chief faces probe over $17.8 million embezzlement: report

Captured from the SIS websiteBy Park Si-soo Seoul International School (SIS) is under police investigation over allegations its chairman and headmaster Kim Hyung-shik embezzled 20 billion won ($17.8 million) in school money, local media reported on Wednesday. The school has not commented. According to broadcaster JTBC, Kim siphoned off the money between 2001 and 2017 and wired 13 billion won to SIS founder Edward B. Adams as paycheck and severance money. Kim pocketed the rest, JTBC reported.Kim reportedly remitted the money in a bid to take over the school's managerial rights from the American founder. Korean law bans Korean nationals from having an international school. The founder moved to the U.S. state of Arizona in 2001 and Kim has since managed school affairs in the capacity of “deputy chief.” Gyeonggi Office of Education detected the suspicious deal and asked police to investigate. By Park Si-soo A man in his 40s was fined 4 million won ($3,560) for touching a younger man's crotch. He was also ordered to attend a 40-hour sex-crime prevention program. Jeju Provincial Court made the ruling on Wednesday, finding the accused, surnamed Song, 44, guilty of molestation. The incident happened at a pub on Jeju Island about 3 a.m. Jan. 26. The intoxicated accused approached the victim, 20, and touched his crotch, saying “Hey. You are good-looking and have strong thighs.” The court said the accused was fined a “long time ago” in another molestation case and he was involved in the latest case with his jail term imposed for obstruction of justice suspended. “The verdict was made after taking into account that the accused feels remorse and the victim asked for mercy,” presiding Judge Han Jung-seok said.

Korean-Japanese gets suspended jail term for attacking stewardess

A man assaulted a flight attendant during the flight. Busan District Court said the man, 30, had tried to strangle the stewardess, 28, and hit her arm twice, for which she needed two weeks' medical treatment. He man claimed the stewardess had scratched his hand while storing his luggage and coat. The attack happened on an Air Busan flight departing from Busan for Osaka, Japan.The captain returned the plane to Gimhae International Airport, where the man was arrested.“He had threatened other passengers and did not make any attempt to settle the matter amicably with the victim,” the court said.

The man is under investigation for allegedly threatening colleagues. YonhapBy Jung Hae-myoung A man is in custody for allegedly threatening two work colleagues with a large fruit-knife after one of them ignored his offer of a peeled apple. Busan Nambu Police said the incident happened on Aug. 30. They said the accused man, 38, offered a peeled apple to a colleague. When the colleague refused, the accused man adopted a “pose to stab him” with a knife 27 centimeters long. The suspect also allegedly threatened another colleague who came into the office to see the first victim. “The suspect had thought the two men were those frequently talking behind his back,” an investigator said.

Hwang Young-cheul A regional court on Friday meted out a suspended prison term for a three-term opposition lawmaker for misusing funds and making donations over the legal limit.The Chuncheon District Court sentenced Rep. Hwang Young-cheul of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party to 2 1/2 years in jail, suspended for four years. The court ordered him to pay a 5 million won (US$4,492) fine and to forfeit 287 million won.If convicted by the Supreme Court, he will lose his parliamentary seat. By law, lawmakers lose their National Assembly membership if they receive a 1 million-won fine or heavier sentence for election law violations.He was indicted for misappropriating 280 million won by spending parts of his secretaries' salaries to cover maintenance costs for the office in his constituency in the southeastern province of Gangwon from 2006 to last year.He was also charged for making illegal donations worth 2.9 million won.Prosecutors in last month's hearing demanded three years in prison with the same amounts in fine and forfeiture that the court ordered on Friday.
