Ex-President Lee files for suspension of prison sentence

Former President Lee Myung-bak / Yonhap Former President Lee Myung-bak, now serving a 17-year prison term for corruption, has filed for a suspension of his sentence, citing health issues, prosecution sources said Wednesday.The 81-year-old's petition was filed with the Anyang branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors Office, 23 kilometers south of Seoul, Friday, they said.The prosecution office said it will hold a deliberation committee meeting and decide whether to agree to the release of Lee from the Anyang Correctional Institution.Lee, who served as president from 2008 to 2013, has been serving the sentence since the Supreme Court finalized the 17-year prison term in October 2020. YonhapAn independent counsel investigation team began work Tuesday to look into the suicide of an Air Force servicewoman following alleged sexual abuse by a fellow serviceman.Lee Ye-ram, a then 23-year-old female master sergeant affiliated with the Air Force's 20th Fighter Wing, killed herself in late May 2021 after claiming she was sexually abused by a male service member of the same rank two months earlier.Lee's family claimed she was also coerced and pressured by other male colleagues not to report the case to the authorities. The family also accused the military police chief of her unit and other investigators of conducting a shoddy investigation after the case was reported. As the case drew intense public fury, the National Assembly in April unanimously passed a bill mandating an independent special counsel to investigate the case, including whether any defense ministry and Air Force officials attempted to cover it up.
