Gwangju Metropolitan Police / Korea Times fileFour suspects have been arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into the country and distributing them in the southwestern city of Gwangju, police said Monday.The gang of four is charged of smuggling drugs worth 370 million won ($276,872) from Vietnam, then selling it via the Telegram messaging app or to night club workers from April 2022 until last month in Gwangju, a city 268 kilometers south of Seoul. The main culprit in their 30s is known to have lured the three accomplices in their 20s into joining the crime, together sneaking in drugs 13 times by hiding them in their underwear to pass through customs in the Incheon International Airport. The police plans to expand their investigation toward those who purchased narcotics from the squad, including the employees at the night clubs, and asked the Korea Customs Service to reinforce crackdown on drug smuggling. Gwangju Metropolitan Police said they organized a special task force against drug offenses of 159 personnel to "root out drug-related crimes". (Yonhap)

The parents couldn't stop crying during the funeral.The incident happened on May 10 when a city bus struck Cho Eun-gyeol at a crosswalk in front of the school. YonhapA Korean-Chinese man allegedly enraged by an internet gambling loss went on a stabbing spree in a working-class neighborhood, southwest of Seoul, earlier this week, killing two people and seriously injuring a third, police said Thursday.The suspect, a 39-year-old Chinese national of Korean descent, was apprehended by police after committing the murders at a permanent rental apartment in Siheung, 26 kilometers from Seoul, at around 8 p.m. Wednesday.He reportedly began the stabbing spree after losing about 1.6 million won ($1,203) in online gambling earlier that day, on top of a cumulative loss of about 80 million won.The first victim, a man in his 40s, is said to have introduced the suspect to internet gambling and they gambled together before, according to the Gyeonggi Siheung Police Station. The sentence, delivered by the Suwon District Court's branch in Yeoju, 61 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is the maximum penalty the country's Animal Protection Act allows for animal cruelty. The 66-year-old man was indicted on charges of starving more than 1,000 cats and dogs to death since February 2020. He took over the animals, abandoned by pet breeding farms for low commercial value, in exchange for receiving 10,000 won ($7.53) per pet.A total of 1,256 dead cats and dogs were found in his house in the nearby county of Yangpyeong.
