Court dismisses hostess bar allegations against judge as 'abstract'

A Seoul court on Thursday dismissed as "abstract" allegations that one of its judges was treated to multiple visits to an expensive hostess bar. The Seoul Central District Court released the statement a day after Rep. Kim Yong-min of the liberal Democratic Party disclosed during a parliamentary session what he said was a "detailed tip-off" that judge Jee Kui-youn visited a hostess bar multiple times without once paying the cost of 1 million won ($716) to 2 million won per person. "The allegations in question are not only abstract, but no detailed material was presented and the veracity of the allegations was not confirmed," the court said in a statement to the press. "There is nothing the Central District Court can say regarding this." Jee is the presiding judge for former President Yoon Suk Yeol's trial on insurrection charges related to his Dec. 3 declaration of martial law. He was also the judge responsible for canceling Yoon's arrest over the martial law bid in March. During the parliamentary session Wednesday, Rep. Kim said Jee's alleged visits to the bar appeared to be a violation o

2 pro-Yoon rioters jailed for vandalizing court

Two men have been imprisoned for vandalizing court facilities in protest against the decision to issue an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol earlier this year. Judge Kim Jin-sung at the Seoul Western District Court, where the Jan. 19 attack took place, on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old man, surnamed Kim, to 18 months in prison, and another man, surnamed So, to one year, on charges of trespassing and damaging public property. Kim and So were among dozens of protesters who stormed the building that day, smashing windows and damaging cars parked in the compound, all while searching for the judge, Cha Eun-kyung, who had made the decision. The violence followed the approval of Yoon's formal arrest, after he was impeached by the National Assembly and was being investigated on charges of insurrection related to his declaration of martial law the previous month. Investigators later found that Kim had damaged one of the court building’s walls using bricks and had trespassed despite warnings and attempts by police to stop him. So was also found to have used pieces of broken til

Ex-first lady skips prosecutors' questioning over influence-peddling scandal

Former first lady Kim Keon Hee declined to appear before the prosecution on Wednesday, defying a summons for questioning over allegations of influence peddling in the 2022 parliamentary by-elections. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office had asked the ex-first lady to appear for questioning as a suspect at 9 a.m., but Kim did not comply with the summons request. Earlier on Tuesday, Kim submitted a letter of excuse for her non-attendance, saying it could sway public opinion ahead of the upcoming presidential election. Kim faces charges of violating the Public Official Election Act and the Political Funds Act in connection with allegations that she helped former People Power Party (PPP) Rep. Kim Young-sun win the party's nomination for the 2022 by-elections via Myung Tae-kyun, a self-proclaimed power broker, who in return conducted free public opinion polls favorable to Yoon ahead of the 2022 presidential election. The former first lady has additionally been accused of involvement in the PPP's candidate nominations for the 2022 local elections and the 2024 general elections. Prosecu

Family loses suit against automaker over fatal 'sudden acceleration' accident

The family of a boy who was killed in a car accident allegedly caused by a sudden unintended acceleration lost their civil suit against the automaker Tuesday. The Gangneung branch of the Chuncheon District Court rejected the family's request for 920 million won ($647,000) in damages from KG Mobility over the death of 12-year-old Lee Do-hyeon in December 2022. "The likelihood is high that the driver stepped on the accelerator after mistaking it for the brake, making it difficult to recognize that the accident was caused by a defect in the electronic control unit," the court said, referring to one of the plaintiff's arguments. Lee was killed in Gangneung, about 170 kilometers east of Seoul, when the SUV he was riding in and driven by his grandmother spun out of control, allegedly due to sudden unintended acceleration. Lee's father, Lee Sang-hun, vowed to immediately appeal the ruling, saying it amounted to choosing the manufacturer's reasoning over the truth.

Two middle schoolers caught using marijuana in neighborhood playground

Two middle school students have been apprehended by police in Seoul for using marijuana at a neighborhood playground in a residential area. Seoul’s Nowon Police Station said Monday that the two teens are under investigation for violating the Narcotics Control Act. According to police, the students were spotted around 9:10 p.m. on April 25 at a playground near an apartment complex, allegedly smoking liquid cannabis. Officers from the Seoul Metropolitan Police’s mobile patrol unit noticed the teens after they began running and shouting phrases such as “Someone is chasing us” and “My friend took drugs.” The officers pursued and detained the students, later recovering a vape pen containing liquid marijuana that the teens had discarded. The students were taken to the nearest police station, and the case was transferred to Nowon Police Station. Authorities confirmed that both individuals are over the age of 14 and therefore not classified as "juvenile offenders" under Korean law. Investigators are currently looking into how the teens obtained the drugs. This article from the Hankook

Top court says its justices will not appear for parliamentary hearing on Lee's retrial

The Supreme Court said Monday its justices will not attend a parliamentary hearing regarding the retrial of Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) presidential contender Lee Jae-myung, saying it's inappropriate to participate in matters related to an ongoing case. The court conveyed its decision to the National Assembly ahead of the hearing scheduled for Wednesday, as the parliament seeks to delve into the top court's recent ruling that ordered a retrial of Lee, overturning a lower court's not-guilty verdict for Lee over alleged election law violations. The DPK-controlled Assembly has accused the Supreme Court of rushing the proceedings to hand down a swift verdict on Lee, which it claims influence the upcoming June 3 election. "It's problematic in many ways for justices to attend a hearing related to a trial," a Supreme Court official said. "We confirmed that this position has been relayed to the National Assembly." The DP has called on Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae to resign, accusing Cho of meddling in the election. The Assembly's legislation and judiciary committee has requested th
