Police seek arrest warrant for arson suspect in subway fire

Police on Sunday filed for an arrest warrant for a man in custody for setting a fire inside a subway train in Seoul the previous day. The suspect in his 60s was caught after allegedly setting fire to pieces of cloth inside a Line 5 train traveling between Yeouinaru and Mapo stations early on Saturday morning. He had boarded the train with a utility lighter and a fuel container. The suspect reportedly admitted to the arson during police questioning and told them that he set the fire out of anger at the outcome of his divorce suit. Police were able to identify and apprehend the suspect because he had a lot of soot on his hands when he was carried out on a stretcher from the platform at Yeouinaru Station. More than 400 passengers escaped through the tunnel. Some inhaled smoke and sustained minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt.

Election watchdog chief apologizes over errors

The chief of the National Election Commission (NEC) has apologized for management mistakes during last week’s early voting for the presidential election, vowing to make every effort to minimize such errors on Election Day on Tuesday. “There were some management lapses,” Chairperson Roh Tae-ak told reporters at its office in eastern Seoul, Saturday. “I apologize for any confusion we may have caused voters.” This came after the revelation that some voters held ballots outside one of the voting stations in Seoul, Thursday, — a violation of the Public Official Election Act. In a separate case the same day, a contract official responsible for distributing ballots was detained after voting twice, using both her own and her husband’s identification cards. These unprecedented incidents occurred amid growing distrust in the commission’s competence and integrity as the national election watchdog — particularly among conservatives, some of whom have claimed instances of vote rigging in past elections. Following media reports about the incidents, members of the People’s Welfare C

Woman accused of double voting attends arrest warrant hearing

A woman suspected of illegally voting twice — once using her husband's identity — during last week's early voting period attended a hearing for an arrest warrant in Seoul on Sunday. Before the hearing at the Seoul Central District Court, the woman, identified only by her surname Park, expressed remorse for her alleged actions. "I am sorry," she told reporters when asked about her motive. When questioned whether the act was premeditated, Park strongly denied it, saying she "made a wrong choice in the moment." She also denied having committed similar offenses in the past. Park, a contract worker at the Gangnam Ward Office's health center, faces allegations that she cast a ballot using her husband's identity at a Daechi 2-dong polling station on Thursday, the first day of early voting for the June 3 presidential election, and then cast her own vote five hours later. At the time of the alleged incident, she had been appointed as an election official responsible for issuing ballot papers to voters.

Subway arsonist faces arrest, cites divorce dispute as motive

A man in his 60s faces arrest for starting a fire in a subway train in Seoul on Saturday, allegedly out of anger over his divorce case. Police have asked the prosecution to request an arrest warrant on charges of committing arson at a public facility. The fire broke out around 8:43 a.m. inside a train traveling from Yeouinaru Station to Mapo Station on Line 5. According to witnesses, the man poured flammable liquid inside the carriage and set it ablaze. As the fire and smoke arose, more than 400 passengers escaped into the tunnel linking the two stations, with no major injuries reported. The man was detained at Yeouinaru Station around 9:45 a.m. He sustained a minor injury and was carried out on a stretcher by other passengers. Police officers interrogated and he admitted to the crime. He showed no signs of intoxication or drug use. He later told police that he acted in anger over a recent divorce ruling. Witnesses said the man showed no remorse, reportedly telling a fellow passenger who confronted him, “Well, no one died, so what’s the problem?” Officials at the fire and transportat

Police seek arrest warrant for election worker accused of casting vote on husband's behalf

Police on Saturday filed for a formal arrest warrant for an election worker who allegedly cast an early vote for the June 3 presidential election on her husband's behalf, officials said. Police detained the suspect without a warrant Thursday, shortly after they received a call that someone had voted twice at a polling station in Gangnam's Daechi 2-dong neighborhood. The Seoul Suseo Police Station applied for the warrant on charges of deceptive voting, seeking to extend her detention. The woman, a contract employee at Seoul's Gangnam district health office who was appointed as an election worker by the election watchdog, was found to have been tasked with issuing ballots to voters.

Education ministry demands punishment for school principal over student murder

The Ministry of Education said Friday it has demanded heavy disciplinary action for the principal of a Daejeon elementary school, where an 8-year-old student was murdered by a teacher in February, blaming him for failing to properly supervise the killer. The ministry said it also asked the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education to impose light disciplinary action on the deputy principal of the same school and an education support office official in charge of the school for similar reasons. The murder occurred on Feb. 10, when the 48-year-old female teacher, Myeong Jae-wan, fatally stabbed the first-grade girl in an empty classroom. The school principal is accused of failing to report Myeong to the police, though he was asked to do so by the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education after she damaged her computer and made threatening behavior toward fellow teachers, the ministry said. In addition, the principal did not fulfill his responsibilities by failing to recognize Myeong's unauthorized absence from work on the day of the incident. The teacher left the school that day and bought a

Police reapply for search warrant in probe of HYBE chairman’s alleged stock fraud

Police have resubmitted a request for a search and seizure warrant in their investigation of HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk over allegations of fraudulent stock transactions involving 400 billion won ($295 million). According to police and legal sources on Thursday, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s financial crimes unit filed the request with the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office the previous day. Investigators are seeking to obtain documents from the Korea Exchange, Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), and securities firms to trace financial transactions. The Financial and Securities Crime Joint Investigation Division, led by chief prosecutor Ahn Chang-joo, is currently reviewing whether to approve the request. Bang is suspected of violating the Capital Markets Act by misleading existing shareholders into believing that HYBE had no plans for an initial public offering (IPO), prompting them to sell their shares. Authorities believe Bang then proceeded with the IPO and profited around 400 billion won in the process. Police have been investigating the case since December la

Will the man behind BTS go to jail?

Bang Si-hyuk, founder and chairman of HYBE, the K-pop powerhouse behind BTS, is under investigation by the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) for allegedly defrauding investors and pocketing some 400 billion won ($289 million) during the company’s initial public offering (IPO) process, according to sources in the financial industry Thursday. The financial watchdog reportedly suspects that the case may constitute fraudulent and unfair trading practices that undermine capital market order, and is preparing to refer the case to the prosecution through a fast-track process for an expedited investigation. If the allegations are confirmed, Bang could face severe legal consequences, as offenses involving illegal profits or avoiding losses of over 5 billion won are punishable under the Capital Markets Act by a minimum of five years in prison and up to life imprisonment. Bang is suspected of having agreed to share 30 percent of the capital gains from a stake sale with a private equity fund (PEF) established by an acquaintance prior to HYBE’s IPO in 2020, ultimately receiving around 400 bill
