Medical experts said while a major cluster of infections linked to the Daegu branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus is expected to slow in the coming weeks, the emergence of other mass infections at those facilities is posing a special challenge for the government's quarantine efforts to contain the spread of the new coronavirus. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) confirmed 179 new cases as of 9 p.m., Sunday, bringing the nation's total number of infections to 7,313.

GettyimagesbankThe number of traffic fatalities in South Korea fell 11.4 percent last year from a year earlier, data showed Sunday.A total of 3,349 people died from car accidents in 2019, down from 3,781 tallied a year earlier, according to data compiled by the land and transport ministry and the National Police Agency.The annual number of traffic deaths in the country has fallen steadily every year since 2015. Among them, traffic fatalities involving pedestrians accounted for the biggest proportion at 38.9 percent.The number of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents last year stood at 1,302, down by 12.4 percent on-year from 1,487.But the figure was still nearly triple the OECD average of 1.0 per 100,000, with 3.3 per 100,000 South Koreans dying from traffic accidents as pedestrians.The deaths of those aged 65 or over reached 1,550 last year, accounting for 14.9 percent of the total traffic fatalities.The police agency said it will continue to push ahead with policies prioritizing pedestrians and focus on protecting the elderly and children. A second cabin crew member of Korean Air has been diagnosed with the new coronavirus, company and local government officials said Saturday.The 36-year-old flight attendant tested positive for COVID-19 after serving on a Los Angeles to Incheon route late last month.Another Korean Air cabin crew member on the same KE012 flight that departed Los Angeles, Feb. 20, was earlier confirmed as being infected, Feb. 25.Korean Air said other cabin crew who were on the same flight tested negative, adding it plans to extend its quarantine of 30 other flight attendants as part of precautionary measures.
