UNC revises rules to allow machine guns, recoilless rifles into DMZ

The United Nations Command (UNC) has revised its armistice rules to allow South Korean and United States forces to carry machine guns, recoilless rifles and mortars into the military buffer with North Korea, a copy of the guidelines showed Sunday. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was originally set up to be clear of heavy arms. The revision to the United Nations Regulation 551-4 recently obtained by Yonhap News Agency governs compliance with the inter-Korean armistice agreement and authorizes South Korean and U.S. troops to not only carry individual small arms, like pistols and assault rifles, but also heavy weapons into the DMZ. The changes went into effect on Sept. 5, 2014, and mark the first time the unified command formally took steps to better arm its soldiers in the 257-kilometer-long and 4-kilometer-wide strip of land that divides the Korean Peninsula since the armistice was signed in 1953.The armistice brought about the cease fire to the Korean War (1950-53) with the UNC signing the armistice agreement on behalf of South Korea with North Korea. The changed regulation states the UNC

Pentagon remains in contact with China, Russia at 'highest levels' amid THAAD tension

The PentagonThe United States remains in contact with Chinese and Russian leaders "at the highest levels," the Pentagon said Friday, as Beijing and Moscow protest strongly the planned deployment of the U.S. THAAD missile defense system to South Korea.South Korea and the U.S. announced earlier that they have officially decided to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery to South Korea to cope with ever-growing nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.China, which has long voiced opposition to THAAD in the South, strongly protested the decision, saying the deployment does not help achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and hurts peace and stability in the region.Russia also expressed similar protests."As we have long said, THAAD is a purely defensive system designed to counter short- and medium-range regional ballistic missiles. It would not undermine China's or Russia's strategic deterrent," Cmdr. Gary Ross, a Pentagon spokesman, told Yonhap News Agency."A THAAD system in the ROK (South Korea) would be focused solely on North Korea and contribute to a lay

Pentagon: THAAD won't be directed toward any third nations

The U.S. Defense Department said Thursday that the THAAD missile defense system to be deployed to South Korea won't be directed towards any third party nations, other than defending against nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.South Korea and the U.S. announced earlier that they have officially decided to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery in South Korea to cope with ever-growing nuclear and missile threats from the communist nation."When the THAAD system is deployed to the Korean Peninsula, it will be focused solely on North Korean nuclear and missile threats and would not be directed towards any third party nations," the Pentagon said in a statement, apparently referring to China and Russia.Beijing and Moscow have voiced strong opposition to THAAD placement in the South, claiming that the system, especially the powerful X-band radar that comes with THAAD, could be used against them, despite repeated assurances from Washington that it's a purely defensive system designed solely for countering the North Korean threats. The Pentagon said that the North's nucle

South Korea and the United States have agreed to deploy a high-tech antiballistic-missile interception system in the Northeast Asian country to upgrade the allies' defense against North Korea's increasing nuclear and missile threats, the defense ministry said Friday. The decision came after five months of negotiations between Seoul and Washington over whether to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, an advanced air defense shield that makes up the U.S.' mainland missile defense system. The allies started the negotiations shortly after North Korea fired a long-range missile in early February in a defiant test of intercontinental ballistic missile technology after conducting its fourth nuclear test the previous month."South Korea and the U.S. have made the joint decision to deploy the THAAD system with U.S. Forces Korea as part of a defensive action to guarantee the security of the Republic of Korea and our people from North Korea's nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile threats," the Ministry of National Defense said. The deployment is
