US Army secretary to visit S. Korea

U.S. Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning is due in South Korea on Monday on a trip that includes a visit to the U.S. Army unit set to operate the THAAD missile defense system to be deployed by the Asian ally.Fanning's three-day trip to South Korea is part of his swing through the region that also includes stops in Hawaii, Guam, Malaysia and Japan. S. Korea's Navy chief to visit US to coordinate response to N. Korean provocations

South Korea's Navy chief will visit the United States to discuss ways to coordinate joint responses to North Korea's provocations, the military said Sunday.Adm. Jung Ho-sub will leave for the United States for a weeklong trip and hold talks with top leaders in the U.S. Navy, the country's Navy said.It said the chief of naval operations will meet U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, his counterpart Adm. John Richardson and head of the U.S.' Pacific fleet Scott Swift."During the talks, Jung will discuss how best to strengthen Seoul and Washington's naval response to North Korean provocations if they occur," a military official said. He said that the four-star admiral will also touch on plans to further develop South Korea's Navy and calls for strengthening already strong ties between the naval arms of the two allies.The trip by Jung who left on Sunday is his first to the United States after he assumed command of South Korea's Navy as chief of naval operations last year. Allies to focus on cutting off cash flow to NK

Navy rolls out new patrol killer boat

/Courtesy of Twitter By Lee Han-sooThe South Korean Navy launched its new patrol killer medium rocket (PKMR) vessel on Thursday.The 210-ton PKMR, the Chamsuri-211, will gradually replace the 20-year-old Chamsuri patrol boats now in service, the Navy said.The new boat will serve as a deterrent and watchdog in the border region, including the Northern Limit Line.The vessel is 44 meters long, seven meters wide and can reach a maximum speed of 40 knots (74 kilometer per hour). It has a crew of 20 sailors.Armaments include 130-millimeter guided rockets, a 76-millimeter main cannon and two 12.7-millimeter radar-guided heavy machineguns.The boat also has a missile defense system.The vessel was launched at the Busan Hanjin Heavy Industry shipyard in Yeongdo, where it will undergo extensive sea trials before officially joining the fleet in the second half of 2017.Mass production of the new PKMR is planned for 2019.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work met with South Korean Vice Defense Minister Hwang In-moo and discussed ongoing cooperation over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, the Pentagon said Wednesday.The meeting took place at the Pentagon on Tuesday as Hwang has been on a visit to Washington for the inaugural Defense Technology Strategy and Cooperation Group high-level talks, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Gordon Trowbridge said in a statement."The two discussed the continuing cooperation between the United States and the ROK to address North Korea's nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs. Deputy Secretary Work reaffirmed the United States' ironclad commitment to defend the ROK," Trowbridge said."Deputy Secretary Work and Vice Minister Hwang discussed the inaugural Defense Technology Strategy and Cooperation Group high-level talks, and agreed that this dialogue would strengthen the U.S.-ROK alliance," he said.(Yonhap)

Four Wildcat helicopters delivered to S. Korean Navy

South Korea's Navy said Wednesday it has received an initial delivery of four Wildcat helicopters it purchased as part of its ongoing efforts to beef up its fighting capability.In 2013, the Navy signed a contract to buy eight AgustaWestland Wildcat marine helicopters for about 400 billion won ($350 million), he said.The helicopters, which carry a low-frequency dipping sonar system that helps it detect and track submarines, will be mounted on frigates or naval destroyers to be used in search and rescue operations, according to the Ministry of National Defense.AgustaWestland is a Britain-Italy joint venture company specialized in helicopter design and manufacturing."Another four Wildcat helicopters are scheduled to arrive by the end of this year after undergoing a series of tests at home and overseas," a Navy spokesman said.In addition to the eight Wildcats, the Navy plans to spend another 900 billion won to buy 12 more helicopters. S. Korea, US hold talks on expanding defense technology cooperation

Gov't says it will test THAAD radar waves again to allay health concerns

Saenuri officials visit Seongju to help resolve THAAD dispute

Ruling Saenuri Party officials visited the southeastern town of Seongju on Tuesday, in a bid to find solutions to the on-going protests by residents who have opposed the deployment of an advanced U.S. missile defense system there."Saenuri aims to facilitate dialogue between the government and the residents to persuade the residents of Seongju," said Chung Jin-suk, the party's floor leader.During his visit, Chung said the residents, the U.S. Army and the party should establish a committee to discuss the issue, adding that the case cannot be settled by staging protests.Residents have been expressing discontent with the move, questioning the transparency of the decision-making process, as well as the potential risks to their health.
