Pros, cons of unification tax in full swing

By Kang Hyun-kyung

Divisive views erupted Monday, a day after President Lee Myung-bak put forth the adoption of a unification tax in a speech commemorating the 65th anniversary of Liberation Day.

The pros and cons of the idea of buffering against the immense unification cost came not only between the governing Grand National Party (GNP) and opposition parties, but also among governing party lawmakers.

During the party’s Supreme Council meeting, Rep. Kim Moo-sung, GNP floor leader, concurred with the President.

“The time is ripe for the nation to gear up for unification with the unification tax. Should the government complete drawing up the outline, we will sit down with opposition parties to move the agenda forward,” he said.
