Bask in light at Lotus Lantern Festival

By Do Je-hae The age-old “Yeondeunghoe” or Lotus Lantern Festival is a highlight among the many festivities that take place this month. Although modern Korea is not a mainly Buddhist country, the festival is considered one of the representative cultural festivals of the nation. Making and hanging lotus lanterns is one of the oldest Buddhist traditions, which continues today. “Yeondeunghoe” is a folk festival that goes back to the Silla Kingdom (B.C. 57-935 A.D.). It was celebrated as the Lotus Lantern Assembly in Goryeo Kingdom (918-1392) and continued as the Lantern Celebration (Gwandeung-nori) during the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). “Organized to celebrate Buddha’s arrival in this world, the highlight of the month-long Lotus Lantern Festival will take place from May 18 to 20,” said Shin Young-jin, an official with the Celebration Committee for Buddha’s Birthday. The committee is affiliated with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the largest Buddhist sect of Korea. “There are hands-on experiential programs and performances to sing and dance along with, as well as

Four rivers facilitate water sports, leisure

By Yun Suh-young BUYEO ― The government’s four-river restoration project is nearing its end and the results are slowly being unveiled. Reservoirs built on the four rivers ― the Han, Geum, Yeongsan, and Nakdong ― have been completed and regions near them are being developed to serve the community and boost tourism and leisure activities. The Geum River, which is called the Baekma as it enters the Buyeo region, has three reservoirs one of which this reporter visited. Baekje-bo, or Baekje Reservoir, is located in the middle of Baekma River which runs through Buyeo County in South Chungcheong Province. The reservoir, 311 meters long and 7.2 meters high, has a purification system that facilitates the circulation of stagnant water and manages water levels with a movable weir. The reservoir was designed in the form of a horse saddle to symbolize Admiral Gyebaek’s return to the river to protect it. Gyebaek was a warrior of the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.-660 A.D.) who fought bravely against the rival Silla Kingdom and defeated it in four battles. The Baekje-bo ha

Masdar project to complete UAE‘s miracle

By Na Jeong-ju Abu Dhabi, UAE — The United Arab Emirates is emerging as a key destination for travelers from around the world with year-round sunshine, pristine beaches and spectacular sand dunes. Such a natural environment, large oil and gas reserves and a cosmopolitan lifestyle make the UAE an excellent place to live and work. Ever since the establishment of the UAE in 1971 through an agreement among seven Emirates, improvements in infrastructure, such as roads, airports, seaports, housing and telecommunications, have been high on the government’s agenda. However, high temperatures and low rainfall create harsh conditions. That’s why conservation and protection of the environment is one of the most complex tasks it is facing. Despite that, the population has grown from around 180,000 in 1968 to around 7 million today. As a result, the amount of land being used for residential, commercial and industrial use has increased dramatically. Reclamation and development have reshaped the UAE’s coastline in a very short time frame. “I know well about Korea’s rapid ec

It is an unofficial celebration day observed in many countries to recognize the work of secretaries, assistants and other administrative support professionals. In line with the celebration, some hotels are presenting various promotions where secretaries can be treated as CEOs for a day. At the Lotte Hotel Seoul, restaurants will offer special courses with which bosses will be able to treat their staff to fine dining at reasonable prices along with special gifts. From April 23 to 27, the Korean restaurant Mugunghwa, Japanese Momoyama and Chinese Toh Lim will serve the
