Life on a rope

Life is like a tightrope walk. You start off slowly, carefully climbing up onto the rope. When you are able to stand, it's all about keeping your balance and not falling off while continuously moving forward. When you finally reach the other end, you ideally come down as carefully as you first began. But if you jump off or fall off in the middle, that's it. There's no second act. Handmade specialty ice cream cool down Seoul

By Kwon Mee-yoo Outside the daytime temperatures soar and the pursuit for more sophisticated gourmet treats by Seoulites has now reached ice cream. Specialty ice cream shops are popping up in various neighborhoods, while dessert cafes offer unique handmade ice creams to match other bakery items. Fell+Cole Opened last July, Fell+Cole features a variety of ice cream flavors from ordinary Just Boring Vanilla to interesting Java the Hut, which combines coffee and Guinness beer. Steady sellers at the gastronomic ice cream parlor include Strawberry Red Wine with Szechuan Pepper, Honey Lavender, and Burnt Caramel with Smoked Sea Salt. Hokey Porky, an ice cream with candied bacon, and Perilla Leaves are also signature flavors offered at Fell+Cole. After having lived in Hawaii and San Francisco, Ho-june “Tristan” Choi introduced a new concept of specialty ice cream in Korea. He had no previous experience making ice-cream before he decided to open an ice cream shop in Seoul, but three months of practice and an instinctive knack for flavors made him a pro “ice creamista.”

‘Tourism is all about storytelling’

By Yun Suh-young We all know the truth about creativity ― that it doesn’t necessarily come like a bolt from the blue but more often than not as a mix and match of things that already exist. Many people famous for outstanding work in their respective fields attribute their success to “creativity.” Achieving success in the tourism industry is no exception ― especially for a tour agency known for its exceptional services. Cosmojin Tour, the mostly widely sought after tour agency in the business community, has built its reputation on providing customized services to VIP clients. The agency consults companies about tours for their foreign clients and provides unique tour programs for them. Now, Cosmojin is looking to extend this service to Korean citizens and foreign expats living here. The success of Cosmojin comes from approaching tours from a different angle. “Creativity comes from emulation. We try to collect and look at existing facts from a fresh angle so that tourists will be interested in stories about the place they’re visiting,” said Jinny Jung (Jung Myung

Restaurant gone rogue

The Harvest breaks business manual rules with style By Kwaak Je-yup Management courses say never do business with family or friends, especially in equal partnerships. We read in books that there needs to be a single go-to guy for decisions. When it comes to running a restaurant, we are told that traffic — foot or car — is key. Service should ideally achieve the right balance between attentiveness, promptness and discretion. Specifically in Korea, one is advised against opening a joint that serves local fare, as they tend to fall into the lower price range and still require a lot more hands than Western counterparts. But since last December, modern North Korean restaurant The Harvest has successfully gained a considerable client base while breaking virtually all rules. It has four owners in equal partnerships, two blood-related and the other two “like real brothers.” With three hired servers, management outnumbers the employees. It is located in a quiet cul-de-sac in Gye-dong, downtown Seoul, practically invisible from the only road it is connecte

Chef Back presents Korean flavor in freestyle

By Kim Rahn Reenacting the flavor of Korean food and using techniques and presentation that he learned from the cuisine of Japan and other countries, Chef Akira Back’s dishes go beyond “fusion” but rather represent “freedom.” Back, a Korean-American chef at the Las Vegas Bellagio’s “Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant & Lounge, Chef Akira Back,” visited Korea late last month to present his internationally acclaimed food at the Sheraton Grande Walkerhill in a gala dinner and a month-long promotion. The star chef said he understands the traditions of Korean and Japanese cuisine but when making dishes, he doesn’t follow the exact traditional way but does it as he feels. “I’ve lived in America long enough, so how I think is very Americanized. Americanization means a melting pot of culture. That means everything is mixed. I grew up eating my mom’s food, so I don’t deny I have Korean taste, but the visual aspects and all the techniques I’ve learned and what I believe in come from this. Everything coming together in harmony, that’s my food,” said the first Asian and the youngest exe
