'Happy, humble and healthy'

Participants of the temple food cooking class engage in cooking activities at the Korean Temple Food Center in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Friday. / Korea Times photos by Yun Suh-youngTemple food cooking class teaches Buddhist lifestyleBy Yun Suh-youngEating and cooking healthy food is the next big thing, after the cooking fervor that has swept the nation for the past two years. But the question of "how" lingers in people's minds when trying to cook healthy food. It can be as simple as cooking with the freshest seasonal ingredients using only natural seasoning.Temple food does exactly that ― use healthy, seasonal ingredients and natural seasonings ― but on top of that, they add one more factor: cooking with a sincere heart."The mindset is important when cooking. The food will taste different depending on your attitude. That is why even when using the same ingredients, a food cooked by a monk is different from an average person's," said Monk Daehyun who gave an introductory lecture before the beginning of the temple food cooking class held at the Korean Temple Food Center, Friday.Parti

Museum San embraces nature

Separated from the hustle and bustle of city life, the museum suggests an aesthetic of slowness. The museum, operated by the Hansol Foundation of Culture, opened as Hansol Museum in 2013, changing its name to Museum San in 2014. It is one of Ando’s largest creations, an odd-shaped creation stretching 700 meters alongside a golf course.Ando carefully designed the place for visitors to absorb the scenery and structure fully, piece by piece. Visitors have to walk from the Welcome Center to the Flower Garden and past a birch grove to the main building, past Alexander Liberman's gigantic red sculpture "Archway."The main museum has the Paper Gallery, a permanent exhibit dedicated to the product of th

Madrid: A city to feel

On the way to the Prado Museum / Korea Times photo by Jung Min-hoThe artistic, passionate, delectable city will inspire you By Jung Min-hoMADRID ― It is hard to describe what makes Madrid magically attractive.Don’t get me wrong. The beautiful Spanish capital has plenty of attractions that I can write about all day ― from tapas restaurants to art and football. But after my week-long trip in the city, I realized that what I miss most about it is the sunshine, breeze and the scene of people sitting by the fountains at Plaza Puerta del Sol. So perhaps, one can say the biggest charm of Madrid is indescribable.Other than that, the highlight of my trip was watching the flamenco shows at the Corral de la Moreria, which sums up the Spanish spirit like no other. The flamenco restaurant was also where I got the most inspirational quote during the trip. When asked what the most important thing is for flamenco dancers, the restaurant manager said, “Feelings are more important than technique.” This philosophy also applies to making the most of your stay in Madr

'Simplicity is the means of change'

By Park Jin-haiErwan BouroullectThe television has evolved into a high-tech electronic gadget. But, Samsung’s latest Serif TV that French designer duo Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec designed is more like furniture than a TV. The wooden picture framed TV with a fabric backing and four detachable legs is the brother designers’ first project with a big name electronics company.  Erwan, who gave a presentation at the Seoul Living Design Fair, said simplicity is what it is for.“One of the consequences of the buying all the time and being fanatic about it is that a lot of products lose universality. I don’t feel that is the right direction,” he said, raising the question of people’s insatiable desire to buy products.    “One of the ways to solve the social issues including ecology and economy to me is less consuming but for better consuming. For me simplicity is quite a good answer. It is means change to me.” His philosophy has been reflected on designing the Samsung Serif TV.Samsung’s Serif TV desi
